Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS, November 4, 2020

| November 2, 2020 10:10 am PDT

Colorado Rapids will be hoping to build on their outstanding – and somewhat unexpected – victory over Seattle Sounders when they visit Providence Park to face Portland Timbers on Wednesday, November 4.

Portland currently sits 16 points ahead of Colorado in the Western Conference, although the Rapids have games in hand over the Timbers. On a points-per-game basis, Portland (1.81 PPG) isn’t actually too far ahead of Colorado (1.38 PPG).

This is destined to be an intriguing battle. Be sure to check out my Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids prediction and betting pick below.

Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids Odds

Portland Timbers to Win2.00
The Draw3.50
Colorado Rapids to Win3.60

Portland Timbers (2.00) find themselves two points clear the top of the Western Conference, thanks to a four-game unbeaten streak. The home side is the bookies’ favorite to win this matchup, although the odds are pretty high.

Colorado (3.60) beat third-place Seattle last time out, so the top online betting sites clearly think the Rapids are capable of getting something from this game.

Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids Preview

The Timbers were made to work hard by Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday, but they eventually found a way through the Canadians’ stubborn backline. Yimmi Chara scored the only goal of the game just after the hour mark, sending his side to the top of the table.

Following well-deserved draws against LAFC and Seattle, Portland thrashed LA Galaxy 5-2 last week. With the playoffs just around the corner, it was vital that Giovanni Savarese’s men maintained their unbeaten streak last time out. The Caps certainly gave them a run for their money, but the Timbers’ superiority eventually shone through.

Portland overtook LAFC as the highest-scoring team in the West on Sunday, but the Timbers have leaked goals throughout the campaign. Indeed, only five sides in the division have conceded more goals than Savarese’s men this term, so the manager will surely be eager to iron out his team’s defensive frailties before the postseason commences.

Following a month without any action, Colorado initially struggled to get back into the swing of things. Back-to-back defeats to Sporting Kansas City (4-0) and Minnesota United (2-1) dented the Rapids’ playoff chances, but an impressive 3-1 victory over Seattle has put them right back in the mix.

Goals from Andre Shinyashiki, Keegan Rosenberry, and Cole Bassett handed the Commerce City club an unlikely win on Sunday, but there is no denying that Colorado deserved to claim all three points. After all, the Rapids racked up ten shots on target and limited the Sounders to three.

Shinyashiki has now scored in consecutive games, while Bassett has notched up five goals and three assists in his previous ten outings. If the youngsters continue to shine, Robin Fraser’s men could find themselves in the playoffs, despite missing a large portion of the campaign.

Portland Timbers vs. Colorado Rapids Betting Pick

Pick
  • Portland Timbers to Win
    2.00

The Rapids showed everyone what they are capable of by seeing off Seattle in style last time out. Still, when you consider how good Portland has performed recently, it is difficult to ignore odds of 2.00 for the home win here.

Colorado can still qualify for the playoffs, but I can’t see the club securing a postseason spot on Wednesday. I’m backing the Timbers to seal the victory at Providence Park.
