Pohang Steelers vs. Ulsan Hyundai – K League 1, October 18, 2020

| October 15, 2020 2:40 pm PDT

It is the third and final East Coast Derby of the season this Sunday and Ulsan will be hoping that Pohang will not turn out to be the reason why it doesn’t win the league title once again this year.

The Steelers were a major factor why Jeonbuk lifted the trophy in 2019 and the Horangi will be going all out for the three points at the Steel Yard.

Betting Odds

Pohang Steelers to Win +184
The Draw +237
Ulsan Hyundai to Win +131

Derby games are notoriously difficult to call and with the return of fans into the stadiums this weekend – even at a reduced capacity – this one could go either way. MyBookie fancies Ulsan to remain at the top of the league but there will be some nerves in the Horangi side as it faces Pohang, so I think the draw bet might be the best value here.

Pohang Steelers vs. Ulsan Hyundai Match Preview

Pohang beat Ulsan twice in the last 15 games of the season last year – most notably on the final day of the campaign – to virtually hand the K League 1 title to Jeonbuk and the Steelers will be looking to continue their local rival’s misery for at least another year on Sunday.

That 4-1 defeat was crushing for the Horangi and Pohang will look to the win against Jeonbuk in its last league game before the international break as a good pointer to how it wants to face Ulsan. AFC Champions League soccer for next year is already assured but local bragging rights are still on the table.

Although the Ulsan players and management may still have nightmares about the end of last season, they might want to take a closer look at the three games these clubs have already played against each other this year. The Horangi has been triumphant each and every time and has looked good for those wins.

After the draw with Daegu, Ulsan looked utterly dominant against Sangju Sangmu a few weeks ago and will be emboldened further by Jeonbuk’s surprise loss to Pohang the same weekend. The title is in Ulsan’s hands now and a win against its local rivals on Sunday will be a huge step closer to the trophy.

Prediction and Betting Pick

  • The Draw

Ulsan will definitely have its eye on the prize at this stage of the season – and with the goals of Junior, it must be the favorite to claim its first league title in 15 years. But there will still be the faint memory of that final day collapse last season in the heads of some of the players. So I think a nervous, but entertaining, draw is the most likely outcome.
