Pohang Steelers vs. Seongnam Betting Preview – August 30, 2020, K League 1

This fixture looks like being a chance for both sides to haul itself out of a rut and get back into the running for a top-six spot at the split.

Pohang seems the more likely of the two to achieve that but recent results have not been good and a change in fortune is needed quickly.

BetOnline seems to have priced this game on the reputations of the two clubs rather than recent form. I agree that Pohang should be able to take all three points at its own stadium but it is has been struggling of late and Seongnam can be a particularly tough nut to crack. The odds for the draw look more inviting here.

Pohang Steelers vs. Seongnam Match Preview

Pohang Steelers had started to look like it might capitalize on any mistakes from Ulsan or Jeonbuk at one point this season. But with no wins in the last five league games, manager Kim Gi-dong has seen his side stall somewhat and allow others to climb the table instead.

There is still a fairly healthy gap between the Steelers and the bottom half of the table but a few more defeats could change that picture as well. Only the top two have scored more goals than Pohang this season but three defeats in four do not make pleasant reading.

If Seongnam can make it four losses in five this Sunday it would give Kim Nam-il more belief in his team’s ability to make that top six. The Magpies have, once again, been very tight at the back but there are not enough goals to make a real push for an impressive finish.

Defeat here would not mean the end of the season for Seongnam but it would make things much more difficult. It is likely that there will be a number of clubs all battling to claim the sixth place spot over the next five rounds of fixtures – so every point counts now.

Prediction and Betting Pick

I have a feeling that Seongnam manager Kim Nam-il could use his team’s defensive strengths to his advantage on Sunday and look to frustrate Pohang. The longer the Steelers go without scoring the more there is a chance that the Magpies might be able to strike on the counter. I’m not sure that will ultimately happen – but a goalless draw would probably be more useful to the visitors than the host here.
