Pohang Steelers vs. Gwangju Betting – K League 1, September 27, 2020

| September 25, 2020 10:02 am PDT

After being promoted just last year, Gwangju will be extremely happy with sneaking into the top six at the very first go. However the next five games go now, the Yellows will finish in their highest ever position.

Pohang will possibly still be hoping for a collapse from Ulsan and Jeonbuk but will probably have to make do with qualifying for the AFC Champions League playoff round.

The Steelers have improved once again this season and should be happy that it has consolidated its position as the third-best team in the country. MyBookie has backed Pohang to win this one at home and Gwangju’s only real hope is that the home side starts to take its foot off the gas now that it has qualified for the AFC Champions League.

Pohang Steelers vs. Gwangju Match Preview

Pohang finished off the regular 22-game season almost perfectly, winning four of the last five games while drawing just one game with Suwon. There had been some poor results just before that so it was probably good fortune that most of the recent fixtures were against bottom-half teams.

Now the Steelers will need to play against the top clubs in the league, of course. But with little chance of moving further up the table and just about assured of at least a top-five spot, there might be some worry for manager Kim Gi-dong about the possibility of taking it easy now.

That’s certainly what Gwangju will be hoping as it starts the final five games a full six points behind Daegu in fifth. With 15 points on offer, there is obviously still a chance for the Yellows to turn this into a real dream season and make it into next year’s AFC Champions League.

Although Gwangju only just made it into the top six with a win over Seongnam last weekend, its recent form has not been particularly spectacular. Although it lost only two of its last eleven games, only three of those were actually won. Draws have been a specialty but it has been towering Brazilian striker Felipe who has been the main source of goals – and will be a threat for Pohang’s defense on Sunday.

Pohang Steelers vs. Gwangju Betting Pick

  • The Draw

I’m hoping that Gwangju will make the final rounds of the season exciting by winning a few of its fixtures – or at least picking up some draws to tighten the race at the top. That might actually happen this weekend, as Pohang Steelers might not be as up for this game as the visitors.
