Pimlico Race Course Picks – Friday, October 2, 2020

| October 1, 2020 4:13 pm PDT

With one more day to go until the 145th running of the Preakness, Pimlico schedules an 11-race card filled with starter races capped off with the Pimlico Special Stakes—a grueling mile-and-three-sixteenths run for three-year-olds and up.

Remember that I’ll be covering the Preakness as well as the other 11 stakes races at Pimlico tomorrow with a special Picks & Predictions blog first thing Saturday morning.

But let’s concentrate on the races today: Read on for my Pimlico picks and betting tips for the three richest races on Friday.

Picks for Pimlico Race 4

This is a starter allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $50,000.

On turf, I like the 9/5 morning line favorite—Aife, ridden by Gabriel Saez. This six-year-old mare moneyed 21 of her 28 career starts, winning seven.

If the race moves to the main track, however, both I and the morning line think your win ticket should be on the 8/5 Wicked Awesome, with Horacio Karamanos aboard. This four-year-old filly finished in the money ten of her 19 starts, winning six of them.

Incidentally, if the race remains on the turf and Karamanos rides the 12/1 Lagom, buy a show ticket. This four-year-old filly moneyed five of her eight career starts, winning three of them. In fact, you might consider an across-the-board here.

  • Win (turf): Aife 9/5
  • Win (MTO): Wicked Awesome 8/5
  • Show: Lagom 12/1

Picks for Pimlico Race 10

This is a starter allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $50,000.

I’m sticking with the 5/2 morning line favorite in this race—Temple, with Trevor McCarthy in the irons. This four-year-old gelding finished in the money for 13 of his 20 career starts, winning five of them.

At 30/1, I like Chargin Storm, ridden by Luis Garcia, for a value show ticket. This six-year-old gelding moneyed 23 of his 45 starts, winning six of them.

  • Win: Temple 5/2
  • Show: Chargin Storm 30/1

Picks for Pimlico Race 11 – Pimlico Special Stakes

This is the Pimlico Special Stakes (Grade III), a race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of 1-3/16 miles for a purse of $250,000.

I’m backing the fourth-favored (5/1) entry in this stakes race—Harpers First Ride, with Angel Cruz in the irons. This four-year-old gelding outshines the rest of this field with nine money finishes in 13 career starts, seven of them wins.

At 20/1, I like Forewarned, ridden by Daniel Centeno, for a value show bet. This five-year-old moneyed 15 of his 28 starts, winning seven of them.

  • Win: Harpers First Ride 5/1
  • Show: Forewarned 20/1
