Picks and Predictions for USL Championship Games on Wednesday, June 29, 2022

The USL Championship action continues on Wednesday, June 29, with three games to look forward to. Before we get stuck into my USL Championship predictions and picks for Wednesday, let’s take a look at the schedule.

Two of the bottom three teams in the Eastern Conference are set to go head-to-head, with Charleston Battery hosting Atlanta United 2. Elsewhere, El Paso and San Diego will be looking to enhance their playoff hopes in the West.

It’s fair to say that Charleston Battery and Atlanta United 2 are not where they want to be right now. Both sides find themselves in the bottom three of the Eastern Conference, with only New York Red Bulls II below them.

Charleston has managed to win just two of their 15 games, recording three draws and ten losses. Meanwhile, Atlanta has picked up three wins in 16 games – registering one draw and 12 defeats.

By contrast, Atlanta has only picked up one victory in the past 11 rounds – suffering nine losses along the way. To make matters worse, the Georgians have the poorest defensive record in the entire league.

I’m confident that Charleston will get the better of Atlanta on home soil. The Battery appears to be heading in the right direction, while Atlanta is stuck in a rut.

In the Western Conference standings, six points separate third-place El Paso and tenth-place Rio Grande Valley as the Texas rivals prepare to lock horns on Wednesday.

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that RGVFC has been one of the most inconsistent teams in the USLC this year. Having recorded seven wins, one draw, and eight defeats, the Toros find themselves three points outside the playoff spots.

Thanks to the exploits of star players like Luis Solignac (7 goals, 4 assists), Josue Gomez (5 goals, 6 assists), and Dylan Mares (5 goals, 5 assists), no team has scored more goals than El Paso in 2022.

I expect the Toros to put up a decent fight on Wednesday, but I can’t see them avoiding defeat. I’m backing the Locomotive to secure their fifth victory in eight outings.

Orange County finally returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Loudoun United last weekend. Still, there is no hiding the fact that Richard Chaplow’s men are second from bottom in the Western Conference.

The Irvine outfit suffered four successive defeats before getting the better of Loudoun. When you look at the bigger picture, they have only managed to win one of their past seven matches.

At the opposite end of the Western Conference, San Diego sits fourth – 11 points clear of twelfth-place Orange County. Landon Donavan’s boys have only lost four of their 16 games this year, scoring a whopping 36 goals in the process.

Given that Orange County has one of the worst defensive records in the West, the Loyal’s lethal attack should make light work of Orange County’s leaky backline.

In my eyes, odds of +100 for Charleston to beat Atlanta are definitely worth snapping up. With the home-field advantage on their side, the Battery should beat an Atlanta team that has suffered nine losses across the past 11 rounds.

Last but not least, I’m backing San Diego to dispatch Orange County with a -1 handicap. No team has scored more goals than San Diego this season, while Orange County has the third-worst defensive record in the West.
