Picks and Predictions for USL Championship Games on Wednesday, July 6, 2022

Although Major League Soccer continues to take center stage in North America, the USL Championship often dishes up just as much excitement. As we hit the midway point in the 2022 season, the second-tier soccer league is heating up!
We have four games to look forward to this Wednesday, July 6. Before I provide my predictions and betting picks for Wednesday’s clashes, let’s check out the schedule.
- Pittsburgh Riverhounds vs. Indy Eleven
- Atlanta United 2 vs. Birmingham Legion
- Detroit City vs. Hartford Athletic
- New Mexico United vs. RGV Toros
It’s fifth against eighth in the Eastern Conference, as Pittsburgh hosts Indy Eleven. Over in the West, New Mexico and Rio Grande Valley go head-to-head in what promises to be a fiery southern showdown.
Without further ado, here are my USL Championship predictions for Wednesday, July 6. Keep reading to discover my USL Championships picks, courtesy of the best soccer betting sites.
USL Championship Predictions for Wednesday, July 6
Let’s get the ball rolling with my Pittsburgh Riverhounds vs. Indy Eleven prediction. I will then share my Atlanta United 2 vs. Birmingham Legion prediction before covering the remaining clashes.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds to Beat Indy Eleven
Last weekend, Pittsburgh snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over New York Red Bulls 2. Alex Dixon opened the scoring before Russell Cicerone bagged a brace to complete the win.
Although the Riverhounds have only managed to win one of their last seven outings, they remain in a strong position. Thanks to a strong start to the season, they sit six points inside the top seven with eight wins to their name.
Having returned to winning ways, Pittsburgh shouldn’t struggle to get the better of faltering Indy Eleven.
Birmingham Legion to Beat Atlanta United 2
Standing on a record of four wins, two draws, and 12 losses, Atlanta United 2 sits third from bottom in the Eastern Conference – 11 points behind sixth-place Birmingham Legion.
To make matters worse for Jack Collison’s boys, they have the worst defensive record in the entire league. They have conceded 44 goals in 18 games, meaning they average 2.4 goals against per game this year.
- Atlanta United 2 – 44
- Monterey Bay – 38
- Charleston Battery – 36
- FC Tulsa – 36
- Phoenix Rising – 36
By contrast, the Legion boasts the second-best defensive record in the USLC. Only New Mexico United has conceded fewer goals than Birmingham in 2022.
Better still, the Alabamians have won four of their previous five encounters – keeping three clean sheets in the process. The team with the league’s second-best defensive record should make light work of Atlanta’s leaky backline.
Detroit City to Beat Hartford Athletic
Only four teams in the entire league have suffered fewer defeats than Detroit City this season. Having lost just four of their 17 matches, Trevor James’ men find themselves fourth in the East – seven points shy of first-place Louisville City.
DCFC beat Las Vegas Lights 1-0 last weekend, with Connor Rutz grabbing the goal. Consequently, James’ men have lost just two of their previous eight USLC clashes.
Only two Eastern Conference sides have scored fewer goals than Hartford’s 17 this season. With that in mind, the club from Connecticut looks set to suffer another defeat at the hands of high-flying DCFC.
New Mexico United and RGV Toros to Draw
New Mexico United chalked up a seven-game unbeaten streak across May and June, recording two draws before notching five straight wins. The Black and Yellow scored 16 goals during that period, conceding just four.
Despite taking one point from their past two outings, the New Mexicans remain in the playoff spots. They also have the best defensive record in the entire league, having conceded 13 goals in 15 matches.
- New Mexico United – 13
- Birmingham Legion – 14
- Louisville City – 14
- San Antonio – 14
- Sacramento Republic – 15
That said, Rio Grande Valley will be confident of frustrating New Mexico. In addition to losing just one of their last five games, the Toros have won four of their previous eight.
Thanks to a three-game unbeaten run, the Texans find themselves three points behind New Mexico. With very little to separate these two sides at the moment, I can see this clash ending in a draw.
Top USLC Betting Picks for Wednesday, July 6
I’m backing Pittsburgh and Detroit to claim all three points on Wednesday. Elsewhere, I’m backing Birmingham to beat Atlanta by at least two goals. Let’s not forget that Atlanta has the worst defensive record in the league.
I recommend going with the under 2.5 goals wager for New Mexico’s clash against Rio Grande Valley. Nine of New Mexico’s 15 games have produced under 2.5 goals this year. No wonder they have the best defensive record in the USLC!
