| August 4, 2022 2:25 am PDT

The 2022-23 German Bundesliga campaign gets underway on Friday, August 5. Accordingly, it’s time for me to publish my Round 1 Bundesliga predictions and betting picks.

As expected, Bayern Munich clinched a tenth straight title last season. Can the Bavarians reign supreme once again? Will Borussia Dortmund or another hopeful outsider upset the Bundesliga odds? It’s almost time to find out.

I have trawled the best Bundesliga betting sites to find the top Bundesliga picks for Round 1. Before we get stuck into my predictions and picks, we need to examine the latest odds.

Bundesliga Odds for Round 1

  • Eintracht Frankfurt (5.75) vs. Bayern Munich (1.47)
  • Augsburg (3.30) vs. Freiburg (2.20)
  • Bochum (3.20) vs. Mainz (2.30)
  • Borussia Monchengladbach (2.10) vs. Hoffenheim (3.10)
  • Union Berlin (1.77) vs. Hertha Berlin (4.50)
  • Wolfsburg (1.85) vs. Werder Bremen (4.00)

  • Stuttgart (4.33) vs. RB Leipzig (1.80)
  • FC Koln (1.72) vs. Schalke 04 (4.33)

Naturally, Bayern is expected to make light work of Eintracht Frankfurt in Friday’s curtain raiser. Freiburg, Mainz, and RB Leipzig are also favored to win on the road this weekend.

Meanwhile, Borussia Monchengladbach, Union Berlin, Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund, and FC Koln are expected to triumph on home soil. Union, Wolfsburg, and Koln are the heavy home favorites, boasting odds of under 2.00.

Round 1 Bundesliga Predictions

It’s time to go over my Bundesliga predictions for Round 1 of the 2022-23 season. I have decided to focus on three standout clashes in detail. But don’t worry – you find the rest of my Bundesliga predictions after that.

Let’s start with my Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Bayern Munich prediction and work our way through the rest.

Bayern Munich to Beat Eintracht Frankfurt

Bayern registered 24 wins, five draws, and five losses last season, scoring 97 goals along the way. As a result, the Bavarians finished eight points clear of second-place Dortmund – securing their tenth successive title.

The defending champions have lost Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona, but they have signed Sadio Mané from Liverpool. Julian Nagelsmann’s squad is teeming with talent – and the bookies’ 2022-23 Bundesliga title odds reflect that.

Early Betting Odds for the 2022-23 German Bundesliga

With the Qatar World Cup taking place in November and December this year (crazy, I know!), many European soccer leagues are set to return early for the 2022-23 season. Kicking off on August 5, the German Bundesliga will be the first major European league to...

On the flip side, Frankfurt finished eleventh last term – 35 points shy of Bayern. The Eagles managed to win just ten of their 34 league games in 2021-22, recording 12 draws and 12 defeats in the process.

Despite winning the Europa League, Eintracht finished the previous campaign on an eight-game winless run in the Bundesliga. At the end of the day, Bayern is on a totally different level to Frankfurt – and the rest of the division.

Union Berlin to Beat Hertha Berlin

Union and Hertha could not have dreamed of a more inviting fixture to kick off the new season. The Berlin Derby is always a fiery encounter, meaning sparks will fly when the bitter rivals do battle on Saturday.

The gulf between the capital clubs has continued to grow in recent seasons. In 2020-21, seventh-place Union finished 15 points ahead of fourteenth-place Hertha. Last term, fifth-place Union outperformed sixteenth-place Hertha by 24 points.

Hertha has the history, but Union holds the modern-day bragging rights. Given how the previous campaign panned out, I expect the Iron Ones to crush the Old Lady this weekend.

RB Leipzig to Beat Stuttgart

Only the bottom two clubs picked up fewer wins than Stuttgart last season. Meanwhile, only Arminia Bielefeld registered more draws. Somehow, though, the Reds managed to avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men finished level with Hertha on 33 points. However, they escaped the dreaded relegation play-off thanks to their superior goal difference.

At the opposite end of the standings, Leipzig finished fourth – 25 points clear of Stuttgart. The Red Bulls picked up six wins in seven outings across January and February before enjoying a nine-game unbeaten streak between February and April.

Christopher Nkunku bagged a whopping 32 goals and 20 assists across all competitions last season, including 20 goals and 15 assists in the Bundesliga. Nobody would be shocked if he exploited Stuttgart’s leaky backline on Sunday

Remaining Bundesliga Predictions for Round 1

  • Augsburg and Freiburg to Draw
  • Mainz to Beat Bochum
  • Borussia Monchengladbach to Beat Hoffenheim
  • Wolfsburg to Beat Werder Bremen
  • Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen to Draw
  • FC Koln to Beat Schalke 04

The rest of my Round 1 Bundesliga predictions are relatively straightforward. As you can see, I’m backing Mainz, Gladbach, Wolfsburg, and Koln to claim all three points this weekend.

Augsburg vs. Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen should be tight encounters, so I can see them ending in a draw. Second-place Dortmund and third-place Leverkusen were separated by just five points last term.

Top Bundesliga Picks for Round 1

  • Bochum vs. Mainz – Mainz to Win (2.30)
  • Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen – Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals (1.90)
  • Stuttgart vs. RB Leipzig – RB Leipzig to Win (1.80)

The first of my Round 1 Bundesliga picks concerns Bochum vs. Mainz. The 05ers enjoyed a hugely impressive 2021-22 campaign, securing eighth place for their troubles. I can see them kicking off the new season with a win over Bochum.

I’m confident that Dortmund’s clash with Leverkusen will be an all-action affair with goals at both ends. Both teams scored in 76% of Dortmund’s games last term, while both teams scored in 68% of Leverkusen’s games.

Given the 25-point gulf between Stuttgart and Leipzig last season, backing the Red Bulls at 1.80 is a no-brainer for me. I expect Domenico Tedesco’s men to make light work of the Reds.

The English Premier League also returns this weekend. If you enjoyed my Bundesliga predictions and picks, why not check out my EPL predictions and picks?
