Pick and Prediction for DC United vs. Orlando City (MLS) – Sunday, July 31, 2022

| July 27, 2022 2:09 am PDT

DC United and Orlando City will wrap up Week 23 of the 2022 Major League Soccer season on Sunday, July 31, with the two sides going head-to-head at Audi Field.

Unfortunately, DC United sits rock bottom of the Eastern Conference – four points adrift of Toronto FC. At the opposite end of the standings, the Lions find themselves in fifth place – 12 points clear of the Black-and-Red.

Today, I will share my DC United vs. Orlando City prediction and betting pick. Before we go any further, though, we need to examine the odds for Sunday’s clash.

DC United vs. Orlando City Odds

DC United to Win+130
Orlando City to Win+215

Believe it or not, BetOnline favors DC United (+130) to beat Orlando City (+215). Despite the 12-point gulf between the teams, the bookies believe that Wayne Rooney’s men can feed off the home-field advantage on Sunday.

The high price for the draw (+255) is bound to attract plenty of attention. That said, the head-to-head record between DC and Orlando suggests that a draw is unlikely.

DC United vs. Orlando City Head-to-Head (MLS)

  • DC United Wins: 7
  • Orlando City Win: 6
  • Draws: 1

DC United and Orlando City have faced each other on 14 occasions since the Florida outfit entered Major League Soccer in 2015. As you can see, neither side has managed to dominate this fixture over the years.

It is worth noting that DC thrashed Orlando 5-3 earlier this month. However, when you look at the Black-and-Red’s recent record, it’s fair to say that the previous meeting between these two sides produced a freak result.

Before we settle on a DC United vs. Orlando City prediction and pick, we need to take a closer look at the teams.

DC United Team News and Analysis

There is no hiding the fact that DC United has suffered 12 defeats in 20 MLS games this year. Only one team has registered more losses in 2022, while no side has claimed fewer wins than DC’s five.

Not only have Rooney’s men lost three of their last four encounters, but they have also lost seven of their previous ten. As a result, they find themselves rock bottom of the overall standings with less than 50% of the regular season remaining.

To make matters worse for Rooney’s men, they have the joint-worst defensive record in the entire league. Having conceded 43 goals, they average 2.15 goals against in 2022.

  • DC United – 43
  • San Jose Earthquakes – 43
  • Sporting Kansas City – 40
  • Toronto FC – 39
  • FC Cincinnati – 38

Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for DC this season. Taxiarchis Fountas (10 goals, 3 assists) has been immense, while Ola Kamara (7 goals, 0 assists) and Michael Estrada (4 goals, 4 assists) have played stellar supporting roles.

But if Rooney’s men are serious about climbing the standings, they will need to solve their glaring defensive issues.

Orlando City Team News and Analysis

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Orlando City has been one of the most inconsistent teams in Major League Soccer this season.

The Lions have picked up eight wins this year, but they have also suffered eight losses. Although six draws have prevented them from slipping out of the top seven, they will be eager to discover some consistency ahead of the run-in.

Funnily enough,
Oscar Pareja’s boys have scored the same number of goals as DC United this season. However, Orlando has conceded 12 goals fewer than DC.

Only five goalkeepers have achieved more shutouts than Orlando’s Pedro Gallese in 2022. Thanks to their solid defensive base, the Floridians are on course to secure a playoff berth.

It is also worth noting that Orlando has registered six shutout wins this year. Having dispatched Montreal, LA Galaxy, Chicago, Columbus, Toronto, and Inter Miami without conceding a goal, the Lions will be confident of downing DC.

DC United vs. Orlando City Prediction

The appointment of Rooney was supposed to galvanize DC United, but it’s been the same old story since the Englishman’s arrival. The Black-and-Red has already suffered two defeats under Rooney, falling to Minnesota (2-0) and Montreal (2-1).

DC has managed to claim just two wins across the past 12 rounds, conceding over 1.5 goals in all but one of those games. Having lost six of the previous eight outings, Rooney’s men are in a real mess.

I’m confident that Pareja’s boys will flex their muscles and claim all three points on Sunday. Granted, the Lions have struggled for consistency this year. But they shouldn’t struggle to get the better of lowly DC United.

DC United vs. Orlando City Pick

  • Orlando City to Win

Given the 12-point gulf between these two sides, the away win is my DC United vs. Orlando City pick. I fully expect the Black-and-Red to suffer their seventh defeat in nine games this weekend.

LAFC hosts Seattle on Friday before 22 teams return to action on Saturday. If you’re looking for more MLS predictions and picks, be sure to follow the links below.
