Prediction for Phillies vs. Mets – Sunday, May 29th, 2022

It’ll be an NL East showdown on Sunday night as the Philadelphia Phillies take on the New York Mets. This will already be the 12th matchup between the teams, with New York winning seven of the first ten.

The Mets jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Friday night. Philadelphia made a rally but came up short in an 8-6 loss. Can they bounce back to take down the top team in the NL East?

I fully expected the New York Mets to open as the favorite, but the MLB sportsbooks give the Philadelphia Phillies plenty of respect. Will we see a tight matchup on Sunday night?

Philadelphia is a respectable 23-23 against the spread. That seems good until you realize New York has the fourth-best record at 27-20. Bovada gives the Mets (+160) odds to cover the -1.5 spread.

That’s a low run total for a standard MLB game. It could get dicey considering the Phillies and Mets rank top 10 at going over their run total. That number would be higher if they always had a run total of 7.5.

Both teams continue to deal with pre-existing injuries. Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo missed Saturday’s game with a wrist injury. He likely won’t go on the IL, but there’s a good chance he misses Sunday’s matchup.

It’s almost hard to believe the Philadelphia Phillies enter this matchup four games under .500. Philadelphia has a +11 run differential, which shows they’re better than their record.

We know the New York Mets are as good as their record. Their 30-17 mark is fourth in the majors, giving them an eight-game lead in the NL East. I faded the Mets in my preseason 2022 MLB win totals, but that was a mistake.

We haven’t seen much power from the Mets, but they continue to score runs at a high clip. Lately, we’ve seen Pete Alonso jump into the NL MVP race. He’s hitting .282 with 12 home runs and an MLB leading 45 RBIs.

Philadelphia has an MVP contender of their own in Bryce Harper. Harper leads the Phillies with a .313 batting average, 10 home runs, and 32 RBIs. Do you remember when he was hitting .156 through nine games?

Now that low run total for this matchup may have drawn a few question marks. Well, it likely has to do with the pitching matchup.

Zack Wheeler and Chris Bassitt have the numbers to be front line starters. Each pitcher has one start against the opposing team in 2022. Both pitchers allowed one hit, but the Mets won both starts.

Both pitchers have elite stuff, but they’ll have a tough time against these offenses. Which side will come out on top?

Wheeler had an uncharacteristic start to the 2022 season. He allowed 12 runs with 11 strikeouts in his first three games. Check out his strikeouts in his last five starts.

His strikeout total has continued to rise in his last five starts. The Mets don’t strike out much, but they’ll have a tough time against Wheeler.

Bryce Harper has been on another level in May. Harper is hitting .381 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs. Lately, we haven’t seen his power numbers on display, but he continues to get on-base. That has led to more runs.

Harper has one run in his last five games. It would’ve been easy to wager on him recording a hit, but scoring a run presents more value. He’ll have a good chance with Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto hitting behind him.

It’ll be interesting to see if these pitchers can overcome a pair of high-powered offenses. They might have a decent day, but I expect the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets to produce a few runs.

New York’s offense is one of the best in the majors, and Philadelphia has a ton of big bats. We also can’t forget about the struggles in the Phillies bullpen. That should be enough to push this game over 7.5 runs.
