Philadelphia Union vs. Portland Timbers – MLS, May 30, 2021
Philadelphia welcomes Portland to PPL Park on Sunday, May 30, for what should be an entertaining cross-conference clash.
The Union currently sit third in the East, having lost two of their opening seven matches. Over in the West, the Timbers find themselves sixth – registering three wins and three losses this year.
This Philadelphia Union vs. Portland Timbers betting preview includes odds, analysis, predictions, and a pick for Sunday’s game.
Union vs. Timbers Betting Odds
The top online sportsbooks have obviously taken the Timbers’ inconsistency into account when pricing up this match.
Of course, it is still early days. But it’s safe to say that Philadelphia has been far more predictable than Portland this season, so it is no real surprise to see the home side as the favorite to win this one.
Still, we shouldn’t forget that Giovanni Savarese’s men head into Week 7 on the back of two straight wins. With that in mind, there is value everywhere you look here.
Philadelphia Team News and Analysis
Jim Curtin’s men only managed to take one point from their opening three MLS matches this year, drawing with Columbus on the opening weekend. But they have grown into the season in recent weeks and will be confident of maintaining their resurgent run.
Not only have the reigning Supporters’ Shield champions won three of their last four outings, but they have also kept three clean sheets in the process – preventing Chicago, RBNY, and DC United from scoring.
Kacper Przybylko netted the only goal of the game as the U edged out DC last weekend. The Polish striker now has seven goals and two assists to his name this year, including five goals in four CONCACAF Champions League appearances.
At the other end of the pitch, only two teams – second-place Orlando and fourth-place Nashville – have conceded fewer goals than Philly in the East. The Union looks strong in every department.
What About Portland?
In all honesty, it is difficult to gauge exactly how the Timbers will fare when they take to the field in Chester on Sunday.
But after losing three of their opening four games, Savarese’s men beat the Quakes and the Galaxy to seal back-to-back victories.
The Oregon outfit beat San Jose 2-0 before crushing the Galaxy 3-0 last weekend. Having scored five goals and achieved two shutouts along the way, Portland fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
Remarkably, the Timbers find themselves in the unusual position of having three injured goalkeepers at the moment. With Steve Clark, Jeff Attinella, and Aljaz Ivacic all on the sidelines, El Paso Locomotive loanee Logan Ketterer has stepped in.
Ketterer has already kept two clean sheets, but does he have what it takes to prevent Philadelphia from finding the back of the net?
My Union vs. Timbers Betting Pick
Philadelphia Union to Win1.90
The Timbers have definitely upped their game in recent weeks, but then again, so have the Union. Although this is likely to be a close match, I can see the home side edging out the visitors.
Ketterer has deputized admirably so far. However, I expect Przybylko to cause the Portland understudy plenty of problems on Sunday. For that reason, I’m going with the home win for my Philadelphia Union vs. Portland Timbers prediction.
