Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays – MLB, September 26, 2020
The playoff chase in the National League is complete madness with four spots still up for grabs. While the Tampa Bay Rays will probably finish as a top-seeded team in the American League, the Philadelphia Phillies are one of the NL teams looking to sneak into the 2020 MLB Playoffs.
With so much on the table, Saturday’s clash at Tropicana Field will be a joy to watch, so here’s the best Phillies vs. Rays betting pick along with the key tips and notes.
Phillies vs. Rays Odds
|Phillies to Win||+100|
|Rays to Win||-110|
The Phillies and Rays opened a three-game set on Friday, meeting each other for the first time since 2018. The Rays lost their last three home games against the Phillies excluding Friday’s opener.
Tampa was 37-20 on Friday, a couple of games ahead of the second-seeded Twins and 2.5 games ahead of the third-seeded Athletics. The Rays should be safe atop of the American League, but they are still a slight fave to beat the Phillies who were 28-29 ahead of this series.
Phillies vs. Rays Betting Preview
The Phillies have been in a strong position just a few days ago, but they’ve dropped four of their previous five games including three straight losses to the sub-.500 Washington Nationals.
Philadelphia bounced back with a 12-3 victory in a closing contest of the Nationals series, and the Phillies desperately need to keep going on the offensive end. They are averaging 5.25 runs per game (5th in the MLB) while surrendering 5.19 in a return (24th).
On the other side, the Rays are yielding only 3.89 runs per contest (6th) while scoring 4.81 in a return (11th). Their offense is one of the pleasant surprises of this shortened season, while the Rays’ bullpen owns the fourth-best ERA in the majors (3.50).
Ryan Yarbrough will take the mound for the Rays on Saturday, looking to improve his 1-4 record. The lefty had a lot of ups and downs in 2020, allowing four or more earned runs in four of his 10 appearances. He still owns a solid 3.78 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.
Zack Wheeler will toe the slab for the Phillies, and the righty is 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 10 starts this term. Wheeler has been a bright spot in Philadelphia’s rotation, but he’s allowed eight earned runs on 20 hits over his last three starts and 19 innings of work.
Phillies vs. Rays Pick
The Phillies can rely on Zack Wheeler, but they certainly cannot lean on their bullpen that owns the worst ERA in the majors (7.17). Therefore, the Phillies’ bats have to step up, and I think they will hit well against Yarbrough.
Philadelphia is 13-8 against the left-handed starting pitchers in 2020, so I’m backing the Phillies to score at least four runs at -130 odds. I won’t take them to win only because of their terrible bullpen, but the Phillies should score a few runs in what should be the biggest game of their season.
The Rays’ bullpen could be a problem, and I hope the Phillies will make enough damage off Ryan Yarbrough.
