Philadelphia Union vs. Chicago Fire Betting Preview – MLS, October 28, 2020

Philadelphia extended their unbeaten run to five games with a remarkable 5-0 thrashing of Toronto FC on Saturday. Jim Curtin’s side now sits top of the Eastern Conference – 20 points ahead of eleventh-place Chicago.

The Fire visits Subaru Park on Wednesday, October 28, having lost just one of their previous seven outings. Can the Illinois club end the Union’s hot streak?

The bookies view Philly (1.83) as the favorite to win this one, and you can’t argue with that viewpoint. Given that Chicago (4.20) is so far behind the U, the odds for the home victory actually seem pretty high.

However, the Fire has enjoyed a series of impressive results recently, meaning the price for the draw (3.55) is bound to attract plenty of attention.

When Philadelphia lost 2-1 to Toronto at the beginning of October, it looked as though the Canadians would finish top of the Eastern Conference. But Curtin’s men clearly had other ideas.

The Union picked up ten points from their next four games, claiming victories over FC Cincinnati, Montreal Impact, and New England Revolution, along with a draw against DC United. But even the most loyal Philly supporter could not have predicted what happened last weekend.

The Pennsylvania club completely dominated Toronto and got their revenge with a crushing 5-0 victory. Sergio Santos netted a hat-trick, while Mark McKenzie and Jamiro Monteiro also got on the scoresheet. The U racked up a whopping 27 shots and limited the Reds to just a single attempt on target.

It was undoubtedly the Union’s best performance of the season, and Curtin’s men will now be brimming with confidence.

Philly stole the headlines last weekend, but let’s not forget that Chicago also secured a solid result. Indeed, the Fire extended their unbeaten streak to three games with a well-deserved draw against a rejuvenated New York Red Bulls team.

Usurpingly, Robert Beric was on target again on Saturday. The unstoppable Slovenian striker bagged his seventh goal in nine appearances, while fellow European Przemyslaw Frankowski also found the back of the net.

Raphael Wicky’s men may find themselves just outside the top ten, but they are level with Inter Miami on 21 points and only two points behind ninth-place Montreal Impact with a game in hand over the Canadians.

A top-six finish may be out of reach, but Chicago is certainly capable of reaching the play-offs via the qualifiers.

Don’t get me wrong, Chicago has been playing some top-quality soccer recently. But given that Philly crushed Toronto 5-0 last time out, I can’t believe the price for the Union win is so high here.

The Fire has what it takes to cause an upset, but right now, I can’t see them stopping the U. After all, Curtin’s men are the top scorers in East by some distance, while Chicago has one of the poorest defensive records in the division.
