With so many of the favorites out of the way, the 2020 French Open women’s singles event looks wide open. One of the quarterfinals with a clear underdog is the clash between Petra Kvitova and Laura Siegemund.

Most people expect that the German will have to go home on Wednesday, but you never know this year. It has been a wild edition of the Roland-Garros and we might very well have a first-time Grand Slam winner when it’s all said and done.

Petra Kvitova Analysis

It’s been a while since Petra Kvitova won a Grand Slam title, with both of her titles coming before 2014. The Czech star was far from her best between 2015 and 2018 after various health issues including mononucleosis and a knife attack that hurt her left hand.

At some point, it looked like we may never see the same player again, but there have been signs of improvement in the past two years.

Kvitova reached the 2019 Australian Open final and the quarterfinal of the same competition this year. She was decent in the US Open, but the Roland-Garros has been her strongest tournament.

The former world number 2 is yet to lose a set and she has dominated every opponent so far. Kvitova’s serve has been working well and she’s lethal when that’s the case. Just ask Zhang Shuai who was demolished in the fourth round.

Kvitova was emotional after the match and it’s obvious how much the success here means to her.

I believe that we might be witnessing the return to glory of a great champion and I expect another victory on Wednesday.

Laura Siegemund Analysis

One of the players that took full advantage of the weird circumstances surrounding the 2020 French Open is Laura Siegemund. The German has never reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam before, but she even went one step further this time around.

The unseeded veteran had some trouble in two of her matches and looked in danger after losing the first set before coming back strong to beat Julia Gorges and Petra Matic.

Keeping her composure in the crucial moments has been the key to Siegemund’s success. I’m not sure she can do the same against Kvitova, though, as the opponent is likely going to put her under severe pressure right from the start.

Kvitova vs. Siegemund Betting Pick

I believe that Kvitova’s power should be enough to beat Siegemund and it’s obvious that the Czech athlete is playing with plenty of grit and determination. She should be able to close this clash without losing a set which is why the handicap looks like the best pick.

  • Kvitova (-5)
