Orlando City vs. Toronto FC – MLS, May 22, 2021
Orlando City welcomes Toronto FC to Exploria Stadium on Saturday, May 22, with the two sides experiencing a very different start to the 2021 MLS season.
Having avoided defeat this year (two wins, three draws), the Lions find themselves second in the Eastern Conference. At the other end of the standings, third-bottom TCF has only managed to win one of their five matches – recording two draws and two losses in the process.
Can the Reds get their campaign up and running? Or will Orlando maintain their unbeaten run this weekend?
In this Orlando City vs. Toronto FC betting preview, I assess the MLS odds, analyze the teams, and share my prediction and pick for Saturday’s clash.
Orlando City vs. Toronto FC Odds
When you consider the contrasting form of Orlando and Toronto, it is hardly surprising that all the top-rated sports betting sites view the home side as the favorite to win this one.
The Lions have picked up one victory, and two draws on home soil this year, while the Reds have taken just two points from a possible nine on their travels.
Let’s take a closer look at the teams before settling on an Orlando City vs. Toronto FC betting pick.
Can Orlando Extend Their Unbeaten Streak?
Across their opening five games this season, Oscar Pareja’s men have only scored six goals – and three of those goals came in an easy home win over Cincinnati.
Pareja’s men have only conceded twice this term, keeping three clean sheets along the way. Having prevented Atlanta, Cincy, and DC United from scoring, they will fancy their chance of keeping struggling TFC quiet on Saturday.
Boasting a clean sheet percentage of 60%, goalkeeper Pedro Gallese currently sits joint-top of the MLS shutout leaderboard. But in truth, the entire backline has been immense.
Center-backs Antonio Carlos and Rodrigo Schlegel have forged a formidable partnership at the heart of Orlando’s defense, making it extremely difficult to opponents to find a way through.
The Reds Need to Kick-Start Their Season
By contrast, Toronto has already conceded nine goals this season – seven more than Orlando. Chris Armas’ men have only kept one clean sheet, too, conceding over 1.5 goals in three of their five outings.
After losing 4-2 to Montreal on the opening weekend, the Reds drew with Vancouver. However, they swiftly returned to losing ways – going down 2-0 to the Red Bulls.
The Canadians appeared to have turned a corner when they beat Columbus in Week 4. But having beaten the defending MLS Cup champions, TFC was held to a draw by New York City last weekend.
Although Jacob Shaffelburg rescued a point for his side on 74 minutes, it wouldn’t be unfair to say that Toronto deserved to lose at Yankee Stadium.
If the Reds pick up where they left off in New York, they will undoubtedly struggle to deal with in-from Orlando.
My Orlando vs. Toronto Prediction and Pick
Orlando City to Win1.76
Having considered everything, the home win is my Orlando City vs. Toronto FC prediction.
At the end of the day, Orlando has been playing on a totally different level to TFC this year. While the Lions have protected their goal and ground out results, the Reds have looked shaky at the back – taking just five points from a possible 15.
Oh, and just in case you need further convincing, Pareja’s men avoided defeat in two of their last three meetings with Toronto.
