Prediction and Pick for Orlando City vs. Philadelphia Union – MLS, July 22, 2021

| July 21, 2021 5:46 am PDT

It’s second against third in the Eastern Conference this Thursday, July 22, as Philadelphia (6-5-3) travels to Exploria Stadium to face Orlando City (6-4-3).

Having lost just one of their previous 11 outings, Jim Curtin’s men sit one place and one point above the Lions, who have a game in hand over the Union.

Before we go any further, let’s check out the Orlando City vs. Philadelphia Union odds.

Orlando City to Win1.95
The Draw3.40
Philadelphia Union to Win3.75
Both Teams to Score1.52
Over 2.5 Goals1.62
Under 2.5 Goals2.20

With only one home defeat to their name this season, Orlando is the bookies’ favorite to claim all three points on Thursday. Still, the price for the home win is almost at 2.00 here.

Philly has lost just once on the road this year, so you can’t write off the visiting side altogether. The goal-based markets are also worth considering.

Let’s take a closer look at the teams before getting into my Orlando City vs. Philadelphia Union prediction and pick.

Orlando Will Be Eager to Get Back on Track

When Orlando secured six wins in eight games between early May and late June, it looked as though the Florida club could mount a serious challenge for the Supporters’ Shield this season.

But the Lions have since chalked up a three-match winless run, registering back-to-back losses before drawing with Toronto last time out.

Oscar Pareja’s men still find themselves in a strong position, though, sitting third in the standings with a game in hand over the teams above them. Better still, they are five points inside the top seven.

While certain players have struggled for form in recent games, Nani has remained a serious threat. The former Manchester United star netted in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with TFC, taking his tally to seven goals and three assists in 11 appearances this year.

Only one side in the East – Columbus – has conceded fewer goals than Orlando, too, underlining the team’s dominance at both ends of the field.

Can Philadelphia Continue to Climb?

While Orlando started 2021 strongly before tailing off somewhat, Philadelphia struggled to get going at the beginning of the year before getting into their groove.

The defending Supporters’ Shield champions took just one point from their opening three games, drawing with the Crew before losing to Inter Miami and NYCFC. But since then, they have only suffered one defeat in 11 matches.

A run of five wins and three draws was ended by a narrow 1-0 loss to Nashville earlier in the month. A draw with the Red Bulls came soon after, with a 2-1 victory over DC United coming at the weekend.

Kacper Przybylko scored the winner last time out, meaning he has now bagged nine goals and three assists in all competitions this year. Pedro Santos also got on the scoresheet, taking his tally to three goals and two assists.

Considering the Union has the same defensive record as Orlando, Thursday’s game is likely to be a low-scoring encounter.

Score Prediction for Orlando vs. Philadelphia

In all honesty, this is a tricky matchup to call. Both sides are enjoying a successful campaign at the moment, with just one point separating the teams in the standings.

That said, I can see Orlando edging out Philly at Exploria Stadium. The Lions have been almost unstoppable on home soil this year, so I’m going with a 1-0 home win for my Orlando vs. Philadelphia prediction.

My Orlando vs. Philadelphia Betting Pick

  • Under 2.5 Goals

Although odds of 1.95 for the Orlando win are pretty generous, backing under 2.5 goals feels like the best bet for Orlando City vs. Philadelphia Union.

After all, nine of the U’s 14 MLS games have produced less than three goals this season. With almost 65% of their matches dishing up under 2.5 goals, we are set for a low-scoring clash on Thursday.
