Orlando City vs. New York Red Bulls – MLS, October 3, 2020

| September 28, 2020 12:59 am PDT

Orlando City will be aiming to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games when New York Red Bulls visit Exploria Stadium on Saturday, October 3. The Lions are in seemingly unstoppable form right now, although the Red Bulls also appear to be heading in the right direction again.

Back-to-back 4-1 wins have seen the New York club cement seventh place in the Eastern Conference, but fourth-place Orlando is still six points ahead.

Orlando City vs. New York Red Bulls Odds

Orlando City to Win 1.90
The Draw 3.40
New York City to Win 3.50

Despite the Red Bulls’ recent resurgence, Orlando comes into this clash as the bookies’ favorite. The New York club seems to be improving under interim head coach Bradley Carnell, but there is no denying that Orlando deserves the favorite tag for this fixture.

I assess both sides’ chances below.

Orlando City vs. New York Red Bulls Preview

Orlando’s three-game winning run was brought to an end by FC Dallas last weekend, although Oscar Pareja’s side still managed to avoid defeat by securing a hard-fought goalless draw. Lions midfielder Jhegson Mendez was sent off midway through the second half, but the team held on to pick up a point.

In previous seasons, Orlando probably would have lost that game. But it feels like the Florida outfit has a new-found resilience this year. Not only are the Lions the top scorers in the Eastern Conference (25), but they also possess one of the best defensive records in the division (15).

In fact, only first-place Columbus Crew (+15) and second-place Philadelphia Union (+13) boast a more impressive goal difference than Orlando (+10).

Meanwhile, the Red Bulls’ goal difference has been significantly enhanced by consecutive 4-1 victories. The New York club saw off Inter Miami last week before crushing Montreal Impact at the weekend, but a trip to Orlando will undoubtedly be the team’s toughest test for a while.

Carnell’s men may have been scoring goals for fun lately, with Daniel Royer netting three in his last four appearances and Tom Barlow bagging a brace against Montreal. But the interim head coach will surely be concerned about his side’s leaky backline.

The Red Bulls have only kept one clean sheet in their previous eight outings, and with free-scoring Orlando up next, that statistic does not bode well for the visiting team.

Prediction and Betting Pick

  • Orlando City to Win

Yes, the Red Bulls appear to be back on track following two big victories. But I think it’s too soon to say they’ve turned a corner. The team has certainly improved in recent weeks. However, there is still a long way to go.

On the flip side, Orlando will view this game as an excellent opportunity to keep the pressure on the division’s top teams. The Lions are only four points behind frontrunner Columbus, and I’m confident they will close the gap this weekend.
