Orlando City vs. Atlanta United – MLS, September 5, 2020
Atlanta’s slump continued in midweek with an uninspiring goalless draw against bottom-of-the-table Inter Miami. The Five Stripes travel to Exploria Stadium on Saturday, September 5, to face an Orlando side that beat them 3-1 less than a week ago.
Needless to say, Atlanta will be desperate to seek revenge and return to winning ways. But the in-form Lions are on a roll right now. After assessing the odds, I provide my Orlando City vs. Atlanta United prediction and betting pick.
Orlando City vs. Atlanta United Odds
Atlanta finished a colossal 22 points ahead Orlando in last year’s final Eastern Conference standings, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that by looking at the odds for this game. The Lions are enjoying a hugely successful 2020 campaign, while the Five Stripes are struggling, so the online betting sites have little choice but to make Orlando the favorite here.
Orlando City vs. Atlanta United Preview
Let’s be honest, nobody expected Orlando to reach the final of the MLS is Back Tournament, did they? The Lions may have fallen at the last hurdle, but they certainly gave a good account of themselves. It was difficult to predict how Oscar Pareja’s men would fare when the regular season resumed, but they have returned to action in eye-catching form.
Successive 3-1 victories have lifted Orlando to third in the table, while a draw with Nashville last time out extended the team’s unbeaten run to three games. In fact, Orlando has only lost two of their previous 11 outings, and one of those losses was the final defeat to Portland Timbers.
By contrast, Atlanta comes into Saturday’s clash having claimed just one win from their last six games. The Georgia club suffered three straight 1-0 defeats in Florida before edging Nashville in their first regular-season game since the lay-off. But the team has since failed to build on that win.
Interim head coach Stephen Glass oversaw a defeat to Orlando last week, although a goalless draw with Inter Miami on Wednesday will have arguably hurt the manager more. The MLS newcomer is rock bottom of the table having only won one of their eight games this year, but Atlanta’s misfiring forwards failed to find a way through.
Prediction and Pick
Orlando City to Win2.00
A few months ago, backing Orlando to win this matchup would have been a brave move. But so much has changed since the start of the season. The Lions have netted more goals than any other team in the Eastern Conference, while the Five Stripes are the third-lowest scorers in the division.
I’m expecting Atlanta to recover from their rough patch and start moving up the table soon. However, I can’t see their revival beginning against in-form Orlando.
