Newcastle United vs. Tottenham Hotspur – English Premier League, April 4, 2021

The general consensus seems to be that Brighton has started to look much more likely than Newcastle to stay up this season – and it will be Steve Bruce’s side that will battle against Fulham for a place in the top flight.

These are desperate times at St James’ Park, but there is a sense of panic at Tottenham as well right now. Some insipid displays in the weeks before the international break means that Jose Mourinho is in dire need of a win as well.

Newcastle United vs. Tottenham Hotspur Odds

The Draw+290
Tottenham Hotspur to Win-164

BetOnline makes Spurs the odds on favorite to win this one, but that might be down to Newcastle’s inability to play well rather than any strength on the side of this weekend’s visiting team.

Tottenham has struggled of late and looks out of sorts. This could be the chance to change all that, but the draw bet should still be considered, in my opinion.

Newcastle United vs. Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Steve Bruce still believes he is the right man for the job at Newcastle, but the prospect of relegation is getting worryingly close for the Magpies now.

Newcastle has taken just three points from the last 18 on offer with most of the better players unavailable, and lost a crunch game against Brighton just before the international break.

Brighton completely outclassed Newcastle and deservedly scored three second-half goals.

Bruce will be desperate for Callum Wilson to be fit enough to play this weekend, especially as he is also looking to have to make do without Allan Saint-Maximin. Newcastle really needs to start a good run of form right now.

Spurs could also do with an improvement, though. Some woeful performances of its own – specifically against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League – have derailed what was looking like being a very good season at one point. The north London derby’s lack of enthusiasm against Arsenal was a particularly low point, and now Tottenham really needs to pull out the stops.

Qualifying for Europe is far from being guaranteed. Some of the players may be looking at the EFL Cup final against Manchester City as their best chance of continental competition next season. I would say that outcome is just as unlikely, and a win here is crucial. Son may be missing, though, so Mourinho could turn to Lucas Moura once again after his impressive game against Aston Villa.

Newcastle United vs. Tottenham Hotspur Prediction and Pick

  • Tottenham Hotspur to Win

I’m not attracted by these odds – or the way Spurs has been playing of late – but the caliber of opposition makes me lean towards the away win bet here.

Newcastle has looked dreadful at times this season and still cannot rely on its best players to be available. Another defeat seems most likely – a result that will continue to put the club in deep trouble.
