Newcastle United vs. Southampton – EPL, February 6, 2021

| February 4, 2021 6:24 pm PDT

Can Southampton’s players raise themselves after the humiliation of a 9-0 thrashing by Manchester United. They’ve done it before, of course, but it will be interesting to see how it affects the squad for the rest of the season.

Newcastle will be hoping that it can play a similarly depleted Southampton on Saturday, as Steve Bruce’s side looks to pull away from the lower reaches of the table.

Newcastle United vs. Southampton Odds

Newcastle to Win+186
The Draw+220
Southampton to Win+140

This kind of game is incredibly difficult to predict – and to price, to be honest. After such a heavy defeat, Southampton could come out swinging – or it might retreat further into its shell. BetOnline has the Saints as favorite to win this one – and I think I am just about inclined to agree with the bookmaker.

Newcastle United vs. Southampton Match Preview

Before Southampton’s capitulation top Manchester United, it was Newcastle that was the butt of many of the jokes in the Premier League. There’s only been one win in the last eleven – and there’s usually some kind of chaotic scene off the field at the club as well. But there has been that victory – over Everton no less – and a slight improvement in the way the team is playing.

There was a more attacking verve to the team in the game against Crystal Palace on Tuesday, even if the Londoners ended up winning on the night. Newcastle needs to play more in that style – and might get more of a chance to do that now that Allan Saint-Maximin is back in contention.

But what Southampton will Newcastle face? Ralph Hasenhuttl has been forced to pick his players up from a 9-0 defeat once before, of course. But, as he rightly said, the team that lost to Leicester a couple of years ago was in the middle of a terrible season. This one has been looking fairly good so far.

Hasenhuttl will be able to call on some more of his players at the weekend after being forced to field an incredibly depleted squad against Manchester United. But there are still a lot of players on the injury list, so it will be left to the rest to overcome the embarrassment of the week and get things going again for the Saints.

Newcastle United vs. Southampton Betting Pick

  • Southampton to Win

Newcastle has not been playing at all well this season – and is difficult to predict at the best of times – but did look far better against Everton last weekend. But the Magpies are facing a wounded Southampton on Saturday, and I feel as though a damage limitation and face-saving exercise will be in operation. I’m going for the away win to put a smile on the faces of Southampton fans after a terrible week.
