Newcastle United vs. Liverpool – EPL, December 30, 2020

It seems only fitting that it is Liverpool that plays in the final EPL game of the year, as the Merseyside club has been utterly dominant in 2020 and should go into 2021 top of the league as well.

Newcastle will do its best to ruin Jurgen Klopp’s new year celebrations but will do very well to take anything from the game even with the advantage of playing at home.

Newcastle United vs. Liverpool Odds

Liverpool to Win-357

Even though Liverpool has not been able to pull away from the rest of the league in the way it did last season, BetOnline still thinks that the champions should not have too much of a problem overcoming Newcastle on Wednesday. There could be an outside chance of a draw, I suppose, but I would want much better odds than this to be tempted into that bet.

Newcastle United vs. Liverpool Match Preview

In a way, I am surprised how well Newcastle seems to be doing this season. The club was badly hit by COVID and continues to lurch from one crisis to another – on and off the pitch. But even with all that, Steve Bruce’s team is still a way off the relegation places and almost comfortably in mid-table.

There wouldn’t have been much real hope of Newcastle beating Manchester City on Boxing Day – and the tactics seemed to revolve around defending deeply and hoping to steal something on the counter. The 2-0 result probably wasn’t that bad considering – and Bruce will be looking at other fixtures for picking up points anyway.

This game is not going to be one of them – and Liverpool should be able to see out what has been a very successful calendar year fairly easily. Even though the race for the title looks to be much closer this season, Klopp’s side has only lost once in the league so far this campaign and another three points will be expected.

The surprising draw at home with West Brom on Sunday will probably work against Newcastle in that Liverpool will be desperate to reclaim its authority in the EPL. There is still an extensive injury list at the club – and Joel Matip is just the latest defender to become unavailable – but the attacking players in the team should decide this fixture.

Newcastle United vs. Liverpool Betting Pick

  • Liverpool to Win

The odds don’t make this bet a particularly attractive prospect, but I cannot see Liverpool dropping points against one of the weaker teams in the EPL for the second game in a row. It will be interesting to see whether Liverpool can pull away from its challengers early on in the new year or not, but there should be three more points added to the cause on Wednesday.
