Newcastle United vs. Leeds United – EPL, January 26, 2021

Newcastle has really been struggling of late, but this game has now become a very important fixture for Marcelo Bielsa and his Leeds side now as well.

Last season’s Championship title winners have lost their last two EPL games without scoring a single goal – and have not lived up to the early-season promise.

It is not that often that a team on a bad run of results is offered as odds on favorites to win away from home. But oddsmakers have obviously taken into account Newcastle’s woeful form when pricing Leeds for this one. That doesn’t make the odds particularly attractive, but it would be a surprise if Newcastle even made a fight of it, to be honest.

Newcastle United vs. Leeds United Match Preview

Steve Bruce took the unusual step of publically lambasting his players before the game against Arsenal last Monday. But his gamble failed spectacularly, with Newcastle losing that one 3-0 – and then falling to Aston Villa on Saturday. It might only be Mike Ashley’s lack of appetite for sacking Bruce that still keeps him in the job.

Newcastle has not won in the last nine games in all competitions – and has failed to score at all in the last four. COVID has hit the club hard, with the loss of Allan Saint-Maximin affecting the chances of finding the net in a big way. But there have been obvious disagreement between players and management over tactics as well – and Bruce seems to be losing there as well.

All that makes this game a perfect opportunity for Marcelo Bielsa to hit back at his recent critics by overseeing a Leeds victory for the first time this year. The club was knocked out of the FA Cup in embarrassing fashion by League Two side Crawley Town and hasn’t scored in the last two EPL games either.

The absence of Kalvin Phillips made a big difference in the home defeat to Brighton last time out – and he will be counted on in the middle of the field on Tuesday to take his team forward. Leeds’ style of play means that there will always be a few goals conceded, but a clean sheet would really help the likes of Patrick Bamford make the difference against a poor Newcastle side.

Newcastle United vs. Leeds United Betting Pick

  • Leeds United to Win

It is surely only because of the terrible seasons that Fulham, West Brom, and Sheffield United are experiencing that Newcastle isn’t already in the bottom three. There seems to be no desire or enthusiasm in the squad at the moment, and another defeat here might tip the owner’s hand when it comes to getting rid of the manager.
