The Jets will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak to six games when struggling Wellington visits McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday, February 28.

A run of three wins and two draws has seen Newcastle climb to sixth on the A-League ladder – six points ahead of last-place Wellington.

Newcastle Jets to Win2.20
The Draw3.45
Wellington Phoenix to Win3.10

10bet views Newcastle (2.20) as the favorite to claim all three points on Sunday, although the price for the home win is sizeable here.

After winning just one of their eight games this season, the Nix (3.10) are the deserved outsiders. Can Ufuk Talay’s men upset the odds and snatch an unlikely draw (3.45) this weekend?

Let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Newcastle Jets vs. Wellington Phoenix Match Analysis

The Jets kicked off their 2020/21 A-League campaign with four straight losses. But since then, they have only been moving in one direction.

In fact, Newcastle’s five-game unbeaten streak began with a 2-1 victory over Wellington in late January. Craig Deans’ men have also beaten Melbourne City and Victory in February, as well as claiming draws against the Wanderers and the Roar.

The Jets may be the second-lowest scorers in the league. But having kept three consecutive clean sheets, they also boast the second-best defensive record.

There is no denying that Deans’ men were fortunate to beat the Nix last time around. After all, Newcastle saw just 34% possession in Wollongong, while Wellington racked up a whopping 23 shots. However, goals from Valentino Yuel and Roy O’Donovan eventually got the job done.

The Jets converted two of their three shots on target into goals in the previous meeting, while the Nix only managed to score one goal from eight attempts on target.

A match against fellow strugglers Melbourne Victory presented Talay’s men with an ideal opportunity to get on track in midweek. But unfortunately, they failed to seize the opportunity.

Wellington was sitting one point ahead of Victory at the foot of the A-League ladder before the two sides met on Wednesday. Following a damaging 2-0 loss, the Kiwis now find themselves two points adrift at the bottom.

Not only have the Nix won just one of their eight games this term, but they have also claimed just two draws along the way. Five defeats – three of which have come in the past four outings – have left the club in a perilous position.

Only one team – Melbourne Victory – has scored fewer goals than Wellington this season, while Adelaide is currently the only side with a poorer defensive record in the A-League.

With the team struggling at both ends of the pitch, the New Zealanders clearly have plenty of issues that need addressing.

Newcastle Jets vs. Wellington Phoenix Prediction and Pick

  • Newcastle Jets to Win

In my eyes, the price for the home win is too good to miss here. The Jets are currently enjoying a five-match unbeaten run, and perhaps most importantly, they have looked seriously solid at the back in recent games.

On the flip side, Wellington appears to be getting worse with every passing match. The Nix just can’t seem to dig themselves out of their rut, making it extremely difficult to back the Kiwis at the moment.
