Newcastle Jets vs. Sydney FC – A-League, May 8, 2021
Will Newcastle’s winless streak ever end?
Following a 3-1 loss to Melbourne City, the Jets have now failed to win any of their previous 11 outings – registering nine defeats and two draws in the process. Unfortunately, the defending champions visit McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday, May 8.
Despite suffering a 3-2 loss in last weekend’s Sydney Derby, the Sky Blues are expected to extend Newcastle’s dismal run, having only lost one of their last seven matches (three wins, three draws).
I discuss the A-League odds for Saturday’s clash and share my Newcastle Jets vs. Sydney FC prediction and betting pick.
Newcastle Jets vs. Sydney FC Odds
No shocks here!
Steve Corica’s men may have lost last time out, but they are likely to bounce back and return to winning ways against a Newcastle team that is seriously low on confidence at the moment.
When you consider the contrasting form of these two sides, the price for the Sydney FC win is actually pretty generous.
Previewing the Match
Newcastle endured a club-record seven-match losing streak between late February and mid-April, scoring just five goals along the way.
Back-to-back draws with Perth Glory, and Macarthur pointed towards an upturn for the Jets. However, they swiftly returned to losing ways against Western United before suffering yet another defeat to Melbourne City last time out.
Having last tasted victory almost three months ago, it feels as though Newcastle has forgotten how to win.
It is clear that Craig Deans’ men need to start scoring more goals. Indeed, they have only netted 17 goals in 20 games this year – meaning they have the worst scoring record in the A-League by a considerable margin.
Of course, a top-six finish is now out of reach for the Jets. But they will surely be eager to win back some dignity and finish the season on a high.
Corica’s men found themselves 2-0 down inside 16 minutes last weekend, and the Wanderers eventually clinched the Sydney bragging rights with a 3-2 victory.
Still, the Sky Blues will feel they should have extended their unbeaten streak to seven games, especially after dominating possession and creating countless goalscoring opportunities.
You probably won’t be surprised to hear that Bobo got on the scoresheet against last time out. The Brazilian has now bagged eight goals in 15 appearances since returning to the club, including four goals in his last four games.
Looking at the bigger picture, the reigning champs have only lost two of their last 12 matches – picking up five wins and five draws in that time. They have also scored over 1.5 goals in six of their previous 11 encounters.
Melbourne City appears to be running away with the premiership, but Sydney FC looks set to push last year’s runner-up all the way.
My Jets vs. Sydney FC Betting Pick
Sydney FC to Win1.64
It goes without saying that Corica’s men will be desperate to put last weekend’s derby loss behind them and return to winning ways on Saturday. Thankfully, they could not have dreamed of a better opportunity to get back on track.
At the end of the day, the Jets have been nothing short of dreadful for the best part of three months now. That’s why the away win is my Newcastle Jets vs. Sydney FC prediction.
