Newcastle Jets vs. Adelaide United – A-League, March 21, 2021
Adelaide has the opportunity to notch up five straight A-League wins this weekend, with Newcastle hosting the Reds at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday, March 21.
By contrast, the Jets head into Sunday’s clash on the back of three consecutive defeats, meaning they find themselves second from bottom on the A-League ladder – four points ahead of Melbourne Victory.
Right, let’s get into my betting preview for Newcastle Jets vs. Adelaide United, starting with the odds.
Newcastle Jets vs. Adelaide United Odds
Given that Newcastle (2.10) currently trails Adelaide (3.30) by eight points in the A-League standings, I’m struggling to figure out why the top betting sites are favoring the home team to win this one.
It’s fair to say that Newcastle is underachieving at the moment. But when you consider the contrasting form of the two sides, Adelaide should be able to come away with all three points on Sunday.
Previewing Newcastle vs. Adelaide
Newcastle’s 2020/21 A-League campaign can be separated into three clear stages. After losing their opening four games, the Jets enjoyed a five-match unbeaten streak, picking up three wins and two draws in the process.
However, Craig Deans’ men have returned to losing ways in recent weeks, suffering three straight defeats.
In fairness, Newcastle’s recent losses haven’t been heavy. Following a 2-0 defeat to Wellington, the Jets suffered back-to-back 2-1 losses, although it is worth noting that one of those defeats came against Adelaide at the start of the month.
Connor O’Toole canceled out Louis D’Arrigo goal in the reverse fixture, before Craig Goodwin netted the winner. But having only managed to chalk up 40% possession and one shot on target, Deans’ side probably deserved to lose that game.

Like Newcastle, Adelaide also made a poor start to the season, losing four of their first seven outings. But since then, the South Australians have transformed themselves into a winning machine.
The Reds secured an eye-catching victory over the Mariners last month, with a win against the Wanderers coming soon after. Following the recent win over Newcastle, Adelaide cruised past Melbourne Victory last weekend
Despite going behind midway through the first half, Carl Veart’s men eventually won 3-1. Stefan Mauk bagged a brace, while Kusini Yengi completed the scoring.
It goes without saying that Adelaide will be brimming with confidence following four consecutive victories. The team is playing with a real swagger at the moment – and they have an opportunity move to within three points of first-place Central Coast this weekend.
It’s now time for my Newcastle vs. Adelaide betting pick.
My Betting Pick for Newcastle Jets vs. Adelaide United
Adelaide United to Win3.30
This feels like a really good chance to take advantage of the bookmakers. Yes, Adelaide is playing away from home on Sunday. But when you look at the Reds’ recent run, it is difficult to imagine them losing this one.
Not have the Jets lost each of their last three games, but one of those defeats came against Veart’s side. Given the contrasting form of the two teams, the away win is my pick for Newcastle Jets vs. Adelaide United.
Odds of 3.30 are too good to miss, right?
