New York Red Bulls vs. Toronto FC – MLS, May 8, 2021

| May 7, 2021 4:56 am PDT

Fresh from bowing out of the CONCACAF Champions League, Toronto FC will be eager to kick-start their 2021 MLS campaign when they face the Red Bulls in New York on Saturday, May 8.

Having taken just a single point from their opening two games, the Canadians are languishing at the bottom end of the Eastern Conference, although the Red Bulls are only two points ahead.

Join me as I discuss the bookies’ odds and analyze the teams before sharing my New York Red Bulls vs. Toronto FC prediction and betting pick.

Toronto FC to Win3.40

With the home-field advantage on their side, the Red Bulls head into Saturday’s clash as favorites. But as you can see, the price for the home win isn’t small.

Top betting sites view TFC as the outsider here. However, I think there is plenty of value to be found in both the draw and away win odds, especially when you consider how these two sides fared last year.

Assessing the Red Bulls’ Early-Season Form

After struggling for much of the 2020 campaign, the Red Bulls made a late surge for the playoffs under their new head coach, Gerhard Struber.

Unfortunately, RBNY fell at the first postseason hurdle – and it feels as though Struber’s men haven’t quite gotten over their early playoff exit just yet.

The Red Bulls kicked off the new campaign with back-to-back defeats, losing 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City and 3-2 to the LA Galaxy. They did manage to beat Chicago Fire 2-0 last weekend, although it was by no means a convincing display.

17-year-old phenom Caden Clark has already netted two eye-catching goals this season, while Cristhian Casseres has also scored twice. Brazilian loanee Fabio has contributed a couple of assists, too.

If the Red Bulls are serious about challenging for a top-seven finish in the East, their all-round game must improve.

Toronto Team News and Analysis

Having dispatched Mexican champs Club Leon to reach the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals, Chris Armas’ men would have been confident of getting past Cruz Azul. Sadly, they suffered a 4-1 aggregate defeat, with a 1-0 away loss coming on Wednesday.

Toronto may have been one of the strongest MLS sides in recent years, but the gulf between them and Mexico’s top teams is still vast.

The Reds’ 2021 MLS campaign could not have gotten off to a worse start. Indeed, they suffered a humiliating 4-2 loss at the hands of rivals CF Montreal, despite registering 12 shots.

TFC picked up their first domestic point of the year last time out, drawing 2-2 with Vancouver. Still, it feels like Armas has a lot of work to do.

It’s safe to say that the Ontario outfit has failed to adapt to the demands of the CCL and MLS. But with their continental campaign now over, the Canadians can focus fully on their domestic commitments.

My Red Bulls vs. Toronto Betting Pick

  • Toronto FC to Win

It is no secret that Toronto has been forced to deal with a tough start to 2021. Armas’ men have played six competitive games in under a month, recording one win, two draws, and three defeats along the way.

However, I’m backing the Reds to flex their muscles and secure their first MLS victory of the year on Saturday.

The Red Bulls may have beaten Chicago last time out, yet their defeats to SKC and the Galaxy exposed their weaknesses. I can see Toronto’s forward line exploiting the NYRB’s leaky defense.
