The Washington Nationals won’t defend their title in the 2020 MLB Playoffs. The reigning champs were 23-32 on Wednesday, four and a half games behind the bottom wild card in the National League.

However, the Nats have a chance to ruin the Mets’ season in their ultimate four-game series at Nationals Park in Washington.

The first pitch of the opening contest is set for Thursday, September 24, at 6:05 PM ET, so I’m bringing you the best Mets vs. Nationals betting pick along with all key tips, betting trends, and the latest odds update.

Mets vs. Nationals Odds

Mets -1.5 +170
Nationals +1.5 -195
Mets to Win -110
Nationals to Win +100
Over 9.0 -105
Under 9.0 -115

The 25-30 New York Mets hosted Tampa Bay on Wednesday night after splitting the first two games with the Rays. They were two and a half games behind the wild-card spot in the National League, so the Mets just have to win every game until the end and hope that their rivals won’t be that good.

I was expecting the Mets around -130 odds in this one, but the bookies are obviously looking for a very tight clash, setting the visitors at -110.

Mets vs. Nationals Preview

The Mets are having a nice season attacking-wise, scoring 4.85 runs per game (9th in the MLB). They are first in batting average (.274) and sixth in slugging percentage (.456).

However, the Mets’ pitching staff has been awful for most of the time, posting a 4.77 ERA (18th) and 1.40 WHIP (22nd).

Rookie David Peterson will take the mound Thursday, and he’s been quite solid thus far, posting a 5-2 record with a 3.80 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. The lefty met the Nats once in August and earned a win while yielding just a run in five innings of work.

The Nationals are scoring 4.80 runs per game (11th) while surrendering 5.00 in a return (20th in the majors). They are batting .264 (6th) and slugging .433 (11th), and the Nationals are 11-5 against the southpaw starting pitchers in 2020.

Patrick Corbin will take the hill for the hosts in this one, and the left-hander hasn’t been at his best this term. Corbin is 2-6 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 2020, while he’s 0-6 over the last seven starts.

Last week, Corbin pitched six innings in a loss at the Marlins, allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits. Interestingly, he’s 2-0 against the Mets this season, but that was early in August, and Corbin still surrendered four earned runs on 13 hits and three walks across 11.2 innings.

Mets vs. Nationals Pick

The Mets are only 7-14 against the left-handed starting pitchers, and they desperately need to improve when they face off against Patrick Corbin. The Nationals, on the other side, will be motivated to hit well against their division foes, so I expect to see a high-scoring affair.

David Peterson pitched well in his previous meeting with the Nationals, but he has certain problems, avoiding a huge jam in the first inning. The Nats are doing a great job against southpaws, so Peterson could be in trouble.

Therefore, give me the over on the totals. The over has hit in 11 of the last 15 matchups between the Mets and Nationals including three of the previous four in 2020.
