New York City FC vs. Atlanta United – MLS, June 23, 2021
With eight games behind them this year, New York City (3-2-3) and Atlanta United (2-5-1) are locked on 11 points in the Eastern Conference. The two sides face off at Red Bull Arena this Wednesday, June 23.
Despite losing just one of their eight MLS matches this season, the Five Stripes have only managed to claim two wins. Having drawn four of their last five games, Gabriel Heinze’s men will be hungry for three points on Wednesday.
On the flip side, NYCFC has only registered a couple of draws this year. With three wins and three defeats to their name, the Bronx Blues need to establish a rhythm.
Join me as I discuss the MLS odds before sharing my prediction and betting pick for New York City FC vs. Atlanta United.
Analyzing New York City’s Inconsistency
I’d be lying if I said that predicting the outcome of New York City’s recent matches has been easy.
After suffering a shock defeat to DC United in Week 1, Ronny Deila’s men pieced together a four-game unbeaten streak – crushing Cincinnati and Philadelphia before drawing with Orlando and Toronto.
A win over LAFC followed a defeat to Columbus, but high-flying New England got the better of NYCFC last weekend.
Jesus Medina has netted five goals in eight matches this season, while Valentin Castellanos (four goals, two assists) and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi (three goals, one assist) have chipped in, too.
But at the other end of the field, New York City has only managed to notch two clean sheets in 2021. Deila must address his team’s defensive issues.
Can Atlanta Upset the Odds?
Given that they have only lost one of their opening eight MLS games this year, it is difficult to be overly critical of the Five Stripes. Still, they will need to start turning draws into wins sooner rather than later.
After taking four points from their first two outings, Heinze’s men suffered a 2-1 loss to New England. Since then, they have picked up one win and four draws – beating Montreal in the process.
The Five Stripes were seconds away from claiming all three points against Philly on Sunday, only for Jakob Glesnes to net an unstoppable long-range strike and deny the hosts the victory.
Heinze’s men enjoyed the lion’s share of possession against the Union and even racked up 20 shots, yet they could not hold onto their advantage.
New York City vs. Atlanta United Odds
I’m slightly surprised by the bookmakers’ prices for this matchup. While I agree that New York City should be the favorite, the price for the home win feels far too low.
Atlanta heads into this clash on a five-game unbeaten streak, so I don’t think that NYCFC will find life easy on Wednesday.
Score Prediction for NYCFC vs. Atlanta
Whatever happens on Wednesday, there will almost certainly be goals. Deila’s men are the highest scorers in the East (15 goals), while Atlanta has netted 11 goals this season.
I’m going with a 2-2 draw for my New York City vs. Atlanta United prediction. Let’s face it – it wouldn’t be a shock if both teams bagged over 1.5 goals.
My New York City vs. Atlanta Betting Pick
Although I just predicted that NYCFC and Atlanta would produce a high-scoring draw, the draw bet is always a risky option. For that reason, I recommend backing both teams to score at 1.71.
Both teams have scored in each of New York City’s previous five matches, while six of Atlanta’s eight MLS games this season have seen both sides find the back of the net.
Both Teams to Score1.71
