New England Revolution vs. Toronto FC – MLS, October 7, 2020
An impressive four-game unbeaten streak has seen New England climb into the top six of the Eastern Conference. But the Revs’ play-off credentials will be tested to the max when high-flying Toronto visits Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, October 7.
Thanks to a run of four wins in five games, the Canadians only trail frontrunner Columbus Crew on goal difference. However, New England can take confidence from the fact they drew with the Reds during the MLS is Back Tournament group stage.
After discussing the bookies’ odds, I share my New England Revolution vs. Toronto FC prediction and betting pick.
New England Revolution vs. Toronto FC Odds
Once again, the sportsbooks seem to think that home advantage could have a big say in the outcome of this game. Both sides are in good form, but let’s not forget that Toronto (2.60) currently sits nine points ahead of New England (2.55) in the standings.
Nevertheless, the Revs are the marginal favorite to win this clash. The odds gap is small, but these prices are likely to surprise a lot of MLS bettors, including myself.
New England Revolution vs. Toronto FC Preview
New England made a slow start to the season, but it feels as though Bruce Arena’s men have finally found their feet in 2020. The Revs have only managed to win six of their 15 games this term, although three of those victories have come in their last six outings.
The Revs kicked off their revival with a 2-1 victory over Chicago Fire at the beginning of September before narrowly losing to Philadelphia Union. But a subsequent four-game unbeaten run has thrust the Greater Boston club into contention for a top-six finish.
New England claimed back-to-back victories over Montreal Impact and DC United before being held to a goalless draw by Nashville last time out. However, after enjoying 66% possession and limiting Nashville to just one shot on target, Arena will no doubt be proud of his team’s efforts.
Toronto went through a rough patch in September, winning just one of their opening four games last month. But the Ontario outfit has quickly turned things around. Victories over New York City, Columbus, and Philadelphia have seen the Canadians move level with the Crew on 31 points.
The red-hot form of attacking duo Alejandro Pozuelo and Ayo Akinola has been pivotal to the Reds’ recent resurgence. The forwards each have seven goals under thier belt this season, with Pozuelo scoring in each of his previous four appearances.
In fact, Pozuelo’s performances have seen the Spaniard become involved in this year’s MVP conversation. The 29-year-old has added four assists to his seven goals in 2020, and it feels like he is improving with every passing game.
Prediction and Betting Pick
Toronto FC to Win2.60
Sure, the Revs are enjoying a decent run at the moment. But I simply can’t look past Toronto FC when picking a winner for this game. The Canadians are in irresistible form right now, so I can see Pozuelo and co. firing the Reds to a fourth straight victory.
