New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union – MLS, October 19, 2020

| October 16, 2020 4:45 am PDT

New England continued their surge up the Eastern Conference with a fourth win in six games on Wednesday, and the fifth-place Revs now sit seven points behind second-place Philadelphia.

Philly also heads into this clash on an impressive run, winning six of their previous nine outings while losing just once in that time.

The U visits Gillette Stadium on October 19 for the Monday’s sole MLS match. You can find my New England Revolution vs. Philadelphia Union prediction and betting pick below.

Latest Betting Odds

New England Revolution to Win 2.05
The Draw 3.85
Philadelphia Union to Win 3.10

Despite performing better on the road this year, New England (2.05) is the favorite to win on Monday. The Revs have won their last three away games, but they have managed to pick up just one victory in their previous three matches on home soil.

New England’s recent home record is likely fill Philadelphia (3.10) with plenty of confidence. The Union has only lost one of their last five away outings and is enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak at the moment.

Match Preview

The scoreline of the Revs’ victory over Montreal suggests they scraped over the line on Wednesday. New England beat the Impact 3-2, but it’s fair to say that Bruce Arena’s men could – and probably should – have scored more goals.

Kekuta Manneh and Teal Bunbury gave the Greater Boston outfit a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes, with Adam Buksa adding a third early in the second half. The Revs enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and notched up a colossal 22 shots, yet they wasted a series of goalscoring opportunities.

Still, I don’t think Arena will be too disappointed with how things are going right now. Recent victories over DC United and New York City have kept his team in the top six, and the win over Montreal has solidified New England’s spot in the play-off places.

On the topic of the play-offs, Philadelphia has all but secured their spot in the next phase of the competition. Jim Curtin’s men have only lost three of their 18 regular-season games this year, leaving them just three points behind conference-leader Toronto FC.

Philly is the top scorer in the East, with seven goals being netted across their previous three outings. Remarkably, seven different players have gotten on the scoresheet during that time. That statistic speaks volumes about the Union’s team ethic.

But perhaps most impressively, the U has only conceded 16 goals in 2020. Only Columbus Crew has a better defensive record in the division, so Curtin’s men will surely be confident of getting their hands on the Supporters’ Shield.

Prediction and Betting Pick

  • Philadelphia Union to Win

I have been really impressed with New England recently. The Revs have upped their game as we head towards the business end of the season, but facing Philadelphia isn’t easy for any team in MLS.

The Union currently holds a seven-point lead over New England, and I can see the gap being extended to ten points on Monday. The Revs will certainly put up a good fight, but I’m confident that Philly has enough firepower to come out on top.
