New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls – MLS, May 22, 2021

| May 20, 2021 6:07 am PDT

A record of W3-D2-L1 sees New England sitting two points clear at the Eastern Conference summit. The Revs got the better of defending MLS Cup champ Columbus last weekend, keeping their second clean sheet of the season in the process.

Next up for Bruce Arena’s side, the New York Red Bulls visit Gillette Stadium on Saturday, May 22.

The Red Bulls are down in ninth – five points behind New England – after suffering their third defeat of the season last time out. Can they end the Revs’ rise and return to winning ways this weekend?

In this betting preview, I discuss the odds for Saturday’s clash before sharing my New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls prediction and pick.

New England vs. Red Bulls Odds

New England Revolution to Win1.80
The Draw3.65
New York Red Bulls to Win4.20

Considering that New England (1.80) has only suffered one defeat in six matches this year, the home side is the rightful favorite to win this one; there is no doubt about that.

The Red Bulls (4.20) will fancy their chances of upsetting the MLS odds on Saturday, although they would probably settle for a draw (3.65), given that they have lost three of their five games in 2021.

New England Aims to Remain Top In the East

It’s safe to say that New England will be extremely pleased to have taken four points from recent games against the 2020 Supporters’ Shield winners and the reigning MLS Cup champions.

The Revs held Philadelphia to a 1-1 draw last week before beating the Crew 1-0 in their previous match – further enhancing their growing reputation in the East.

Arena’s men may have only netted seven goals this season, but six different players have already opened their accounts for 2021.

Adam Buka has bagged two goals, while Carles Gil has contributed one goal and two assists.

Meanwhile, Matt Turner has looked assured between the sticks. The goalkeeper achieved his second shutout of the campaign last weekend, despite coming up against guys like Gyasi Zardes and Pedro Santos.

Sitting pretty atop the Eastern Conference, the Revs are the team to beat right now.

Can the Red Bulls Shake Their Inconsistency?

The Red Bulls kicked off their season with back-to-back losses against Sporting KC and the LA Galaxy. However, they responded by claiming successive 2-0 wins over Chicago and Toronto.

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that Caden Clark was at the heart of his team’s resurgence. After scoring on the opening weekend, the highly-rated teenager netted against the Fire and TFC, while Cristhian Casseres also scored twice during that period.

But Gerhard Struber’s men returned to losing ways last time out, going down 1-0 to Philly. To make matters worse, they only managed to register one attempt on target against the Union.

In all honesty, it is difficult to predict what kind of performance RBNY will produce this weekend. The Red Bulls have made an unpredictable start to 2021, making it tough to gauge how they will fare against New England.

If Clark is at his best, RBNY should be able to compete with the Revs. Then again, the visitors can’t expect a 17-year-old to carry the team.

Revs vs. Red Bulls Prediction and Pick

Pick
  • New England Revolution to Win
    1.80

The Revs have started the season in an impressive fashion, losing just one of their six games. If their recent performances are anything to go by, Arena’s men will likely enjoy playing against RBNY.

The Red Bulls have already picked up a couple of wins this year, but three defeats in five matches is not a good record. With that in mind, I can see New England inflicting a fourth loss on Struber’s side this weekend.
