New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls – MLS, June 23, 2021

| June 22, 2021 6:01 am PDT

The 2021 MLS season may only be a couple of months old, but the Revs (6-2-1) already find themselves sitting five points clear at the Eastern Conference summit.

Meanwhile, the Red Bulls (4-0-4) have endured a wildly inconsistent start to the campaign. They travel to New England on Wednesday, sitting eight points behind Bruce Arena’s side.

Before we get stuck into my New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls betting preview, let’s take a quick look at the key match info.

  • Date: Wednesday, June 23, 2021
  • Time: 19:00 (ET)
  • Venue: Gillette Stadium, Massachusetts

Below, I discuss the odds for Wednesday’s clash, analyze the teams, and finish up by sharing my prediction and pick for New England vs. Red Bulls.

Odds for New England vs. Red Bulls

New England Revolution to Win1.80
The Draw3.45
New York Red Bulls to Win4.40

Given that New England (1.80) claimed a 3-1 home victory over the Red Bulls (4.40) last month, it is very difficult to argue with the odds that 10bet provides for this matchup.

The Revs have taken control in the East, losing just one of their opening nine games this year. By contrast, RBNY has already suffered four defeats in 2021.

Will New England Beat RBNY Again?

Having dispatched New York City last weekend, New England heads into Wednesday’s clash on a four-match winning streak. Goals from Gustavo Bou, Jonathan Bell, and Tommy McNamara handed Arena’s men their sixth victory of the season last time out.

Bou has now registered three goals, and one assist this year, although Polish striker Adam Buksa (four goals) remains the Revs’ top scorer in 2021.

New England’s sole defeat this season came against Nashville last month. But since then, Arena’s men have taken 13 points from a possible 15 – opening up a sizeable gap between them and second-place Orlando.

Better still, the Revs are the second-highest scorers in the division. They have netted over 1.5 goals on four occasions this year and will fancy their chances of exploiting RBNY’s leaky backline on Wednesday.

Can the Red Bulls Avoid Another Loss?

Having recorded four wins and four losses in 2021, the Red Bulls are one of only two teams in the East that have yet to pick up a draw this year.

It goes without saying that RBNY’s inconsistency will worry head coach Gerhard Struber.

Granted, Struber’s men have claimed some notable scalps recently. They beat Chicago and Toronto last month before overcoming Orlando and Nashville on either side of the lay-off.

But it’s fair to say that RBNY has struggled to compete with the strongest teams in the league. Following defeats to Sporting KC, Galaxy, Philadelphia, and New England, the Red Bulls must up their game against the top sides.

Caden Clark has bagged four goals and one assist in eight appearances this term, further enhancing his growing reputation. That said, the Red Bulls’ overreliance on an 18-year-old is a cause for concern.

Revs vs. Red Bulls Prediction and Betting Pick

Pick
  • New England Revolution to Win
    1.80

Although Struber’s men have shown signs of improvement in recent matches, we shouldn’t forget that New England claimed an easy 3-1 win over RBNY when the teams met last month.

What I’m trying to say is that you shouldn’t be fooled by the Red Bulls’ current two-game winning streak.

Given that the Revs have won each of their previous four encounters, backing the home win feels like the right thing to do here.
