Netherlands vs. Czech Republic – European Championship (June 27, 2021)

| June 25, 2021 11:21 am PDT

With Frank De Boer as head coach, how well the Netherlands would do at this European Championship was up for debate. He had hardly set the world alight in his management career, but the Oranje has looked good so far at Euro 2020.

Next up is the Czech Republic, who finished third in its group behind England and Croatia. Jaroslav Silhavy’s side will be the underdog in Budapest on Sunday but may be able to spring a surprise.

BetOnline has obviously liked what it has seen so far from the Netherlands, making De Boer’s side the odds on favorite to progress to the quarterfinal stage.

There are not many that would argue with that assessment, but the Czech Republic has been seriously underrated and is emerging as a dark horse. The Netherlands always seem a game away from imploding as well.

Can the Netherlands Regain Former Glory at Euro 2020?

Much has been written about the Dutch side of the 1970s that lost two consecutive World Cup finals. There was also the very impressive Netherlands team of Gullit and Van Basten that won a European Championship. But success has been rare in recent years.

This Netherlands squad is the first to qualify for a major finals in seven years and is still seen as a work in progress by many.

But Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong has been instrumental in directing the team through the group stage without dropping a point. Captain Georginio Wijnaldum has led by example, while Memphis Depay has contributed to great effect too.

But it is the younger, less well-known members of the squad such as Denzel Dumfries and Donyen Malen that have terrorized opposing defenders and provided the attacking impetus. The Dutch defense has not really been tested as yet but the attacking players in the squad have done more than enough to inspire confidence in this team’s progress.

Too Soon for a Czech Revival?

The Czech Republic – and in its former guise as Czechoslovakia – has always enjoyed this competition. But since its final appearance in 1996 and reaching the semis in 2004, there has been little to celebrate. Now there is a new group of players aiming to get their country back into the higher echelons of European soccer.

But even a delayed Euro 2020 may have come too soon for people to regard the Czech Republic as a real contender. Although the squad is a healthy mix of youth and experience, it might be the emerging generation of players that end up bringing the nation some success in the next few years. Getting out of the group at Euro 2020 would have been expected – but anything else would surely be a bonus now.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick has scored all three goals at this tournament – including a glorious strike from the halfway line against Scotland. But he will do well to unlock the Dutch defense. It is the Czech defense who will have the busier evening though, attempting to deal with the speed of the Dutch attack.

Netherlands vs. Czech Republic Betting Pick

  • Netherlands to Win

A win here would see either side meet Wales or Denmark in the next round in what is widely regarded as the easier side of the draw. Although I have been impressed by the Czech Republic’s belief in itself over the last few years of qualifying, I don’t think it will be the one to end Dutch involvement at Euro 2020.

The Netherlands side is not too bothered about allowing opponents to keep the ball but use it very effectively when given the chance. There could be a few goals in this game and I expect it to be the young Dutch attacking players that are celebrating at the end of 90 minutes.
