NBA Predictions and Best Bets – January 13, 2021

| January 12, 2021 2:12 pm PDT

The clock keeps ticking on the NBA come Wednesday when a big 10-game slate hits the schedule. I mean, that’s the plan, at least.

COVID-19 has been wrecking games left and right, so any NBA schedule is pretty tentative these days. For now, let’s take a quick look at who is playing.

  • Milwaukee Bucks vs. Detroit Pistons
  • Utah Jazz vs. Washington Wizards
  • Dallas Mavericks vs. Charlotte Hornets
  • Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks
  • Memphis Grizzlies vs. Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns
  • New Orleans Pelicans vs. Los Angeles Clippers
  • Portland Trail Blazers vs. Sacramento Kings

Don’t believe me about the volatility of The Association right now? Well, tonight’s showdown between the Celtics and Magic is already canceled.

It’s possible more news breaks, especially since the Wizards canceled practice yesterday. Just keep an eye on all of these situations, and even if games do play, be aware of how COVID-19 news may impact how you’ll want to bet.

With that, let’s dive into Wednesday’s NBA betting slate and break down my predictions and top picks.

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Detroit Pistons Predictions

  • Bucks to beat Pistons
  • Predicted total: 220-225

The Bucks take on the Pistons for a third time this year. They easily won both prior meetings, and they seem to be rounding into form right now.

Barring a random Giannis Antetokounmpo rest day, you can safely bet on Milwaukee here.

Utah Jazz vs. Washington Wizards Predictions

  • Wizards to beat Jazz
  • Predicted total: 230-235

The Jazz are looking at a potential trap game, assuming this contest plays. Utah will also be tired after playing the Cavs last night.

Washington did lose big man Thomas Bryant for the year, so bettors shouldn’t ignore that.

The sudden lack of size could obviously be problematic against Rudy Gobert. That said, Washington is well-rested, and the Wiz smashed the Suns in their last game.

I bet this game doesn’t play, but if it does, Washington is a sneaky value play.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Charlotte Hornets Predictions

  • Mavericks to beat Hornets
  • Predicted total: 225-230

Luka Doncic leads his Mavs into Charlotte, where he’ll take on LaMelo Ball and the Hornets. Charlotte is currently in the NBA playoffs, and Ball looks like the real deal.

Charlotte is fun again, but Dallas is teasing the return of Kristaps Porzingis. With or without him, the Mavs are still the better team. I think they get the job done in a shootout.

Brooklyn Nets vs. New York Knicks Predictions

  • Knicks to beat Nets
  • Predicted total: 220-225

Trap game! The Nets are a mess right now, and they’ll be a bit worn down after playing on Tuesday.

Kevin Durant is a rest candidate with this game being on the second leg of a back-to-back set, while the team may not be completely focused given the Kyrie Irving saga.

New York is streaking with three straight losses, but they’re at home, and the Nets look vulnerable. If KD plays, I’d shy away from the Knicks, of course.

Memphis Grizzlies vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Predictions

  • Timberwolves to beat Grizzlies
  • Predicted total: 225-230

Memphis is banged up and on the road here. They’re also 4-6 and have no real identity with the heart and soul of their team – Ja Morant – still out.

Minnesota gets theirs back, as Karl-Anthony Towns is expected to suit up.

The Timberwolves are healthy and at home. I’ll back them, and I like the Over in what should be a fun one.

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder Predictions

  • Lakers to beat Thunder
  • Predicted total: 215-220

The Lakers stars are always at risk of resting, and they’ll surely be considering it after playing last night.

OKC has been surprisingly decent, but the fatigue factor goes both ways. As long as one of L.A’s main guys suits up here, it’ll be tough to get away from the Lake Show.

Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns Predictions

  • Suns to beat Hawks
  • Predicted total: 225-230

The Hawks are presently ironing out an internal issue between Trae Young and John Collins. Beyond that, they’re a respectable 5-5 and presently in the mix for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The pace of this game promotes the Over, while the Suns have some decisions to make.

I don’t love this game, but I think Phoenix wins at home, and there should be plenty of offense to be had.

New Orleans Pelicans vs. Los Angeles Clippers Predictions

  • Clippers to beat Pelicans
  • Predicted total: 210-215

This is likely one of the slower games of the night and one I wouldn’t be too excited to bet on.

Provided the Clips push their stars out there, this feels like a game L.A. should win at home.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Sacramento Kings Predictions

  • Blazers to beat Kings
  • Predicted total: 230-235

The last game on the slate is a likely barn burner. Neither the Kings nor Blazers defends well, and Portland is putting up over 117 points per game.

Jusuf Nurkic did get hurt last game, and the Kings seemingly always have injury news to sort out. I still think Portland wins, but the Over will probably be the safest bet to target in this one.

Best NBA Bets for Wednesday, January 13th

  • Bucks (-11) -105
  • Mavericks vs. Hornets Over 219.5 (-110)
  • Timberwolves (-2.5) -115
  • Blazers (-4.5) -110

The bets above stand out as the best options to target at your favorite betting sites tonight.

There is a lot that bettors don’t (and can’t) know until later in the day, of course, so the odds and picks could certainly change before the first tip.

All I can do is give you my initial thoughts and work with the news and pricing I have at hand. Hopefully, that helps you go through your own process and make some winning bets.
