NBA Predictions and Best Bets – April 5, 2021

| April 5, 2021 7:34 am PDT

The NBA has been a bit wild lately. Players keep stepping away from teams due to personal reasons, players are scratched right before games, and then the league’s health and safety protocols tend to mess with things, as well.

This is a volatile time for NBA betting, which might make early morning advice columns like this more useful than ever.

I’m back to hand out my favorite NBA picks again on Monday, but before I do, see who is in action on April 5th, 2021.

  • Utah Jazz vs. Dallas Mavericks
  • Sacramento Kings vs. Minnesota Timberwolves
  • New York Knicks vs. Brooklyn Nets
  • Cleveland Cavaliers vs. San Antonio Spurs
  • Detroit Pistons vs. Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Washington Wizards vs. Toronto Raptors
  • Phoenix Suns vs. Houston Rockets

The only major question mark for bettors going into Monday is the status of Kristaps Porzingis, who is questionable to face the Jazz.

More news will trickle out, but for the moment, that’s the only asterisk to note before placing bets.

A lot can change up until tip off, but before you finalize your bets, I’ll take a look at my favorite plays. With that, it’s on to Monday’s NBA picks and predictions.

Utah Jazz vs. Dallas Mavericks Predictions

  • Jazz to beat Mavericks
  • Predicted total: 220-225

Dallas is in a groove right now, as they’ve won four in a row, and are sitting comfortably at 27-21. They look like a great bet for the 7th seed, but still have a serious shot at all the way up to the three spot.

Of course, on Monday they have to host the 38-11 Jazz, who have won each of their last nine games. They may also have to take on Utah without big man Kristaps Porzingis.

Utah is a little less scary on the road, but I still don’t love the Mavs with or without Zinger. I think they’re a fine ATS bet, but the Jazz are a different animal these days.

Sacramento Kings vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Predictions

  • Kings to beat Timberwolves
  • Predicted total: 230-235

The first bet that comes to mind is the Over, and I’m not sure there’s a need for a secondary option. Sacramento had been on fire, but have hit the skids with losses in their last three games.

The Kings are still probably the right play here, of course. De’Aaron Fox is having a terrific year, and the Timberwolves are clearly shooting for the first pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

You could go either way here. I just like the Over, seeing as both teams give up over 117 points per game.

New York Knicks vs. Brooklyn Nets Predictions

  • Nets to beat Knicks
  • Predicted total: 220-225

This could be a tough one to peg. Brooklyn will want to win after dropping a game to the Bulls yesterday, but you’ll want to monitor their roster.

Kyrie Irving, Blake Griffin, and LaMarcus Aldridge all played yesterday, and James Harden did not. Kevin Durant is also due back soon.

My guess is some combination of those guys aren’t available, but how do you bet against the Nets here?

Prior to losing to Chicago, the Nets had won four straight and seven of their last nine. New York slows games down, but the Nets will push the pace, and they just feel like the safe bet due to their immense offensive upside.

The total should be low thanks to the Knicks, but Brooklyn should have bettors leaning toward the Over.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. San Antonio Spurs Predictions

  • Spurs to beat Cavaliers
  • Predicted total: 210-215

The Cavaliers are a bit banged up these days, so you’ll want to check to see if Jarrett Allen and Larry Nance are available for this tilt in San Antonio.

Cleveland hasn’t been able to get past their issues down low, either, as they’ve dropped five in a row, and are 3-7 over their last 10. Whether intentionally or otherwise, they’re slowly inching themselves into the conversation for a top-three pick.

The incentive isn’t there for the Cavs to win, and this team is just 6-19 on the road this year. San Antonio, meanwhile, is clinging to the 8th seed in the west.

Cleveland’s pace has me liking the Under, but the Spurs seem like a smash play straight up.

Detroit Pistons vs. Oklahoma City Thunder Predictions

  • Thunder to beat Pistons
  • Predicted total: 215-220

This is an impossible game to figure out. OKC continues to be down key bodies, and they gave up on winning when they benched Al Horford.

Detroit has the third fewest wins in the NBA and aren’t that much healthier, however, so picking the right side here is total guesswork.

The Pistons play slower and neither team averages over 106 points per game, so the only bet that stands out is the Under.

Washington Wizards vs. Toronto Raptors Predictions

  • Wizards to beat Raptors
  • Predicted total: 225-230

This is another game that could be tough to figure out. The Raptors won the title two years ago, and were still very good last season.

As I write this, they are 19-30 and still sliding. Toronto has the coaching and talent to compete, but they are going nowhere fast in 2021.

Toronto is 2-8 over their last 10, and I don’t imagine they’re a team worth banking on going forward.

Believe it or not, they are now just two wins ahead of the Wizards, who they “host” on Monday. Washington is horrible defensively, and they’ve been bitten by the injury bug, but Russell Westbrook gives them a chance any given night.

I don’t really want to pick a side here, but I tentatively prefer the Wizards just because there seems to be less frustration boiling over with them.

The top bet here is the Over, though. Washington runs at the fastest pace in the league, and they can fill it up when clicking on offense. Brace for all of the points in this one.

Phoenix Suns vs. Houston Rockets Predictions

  • Suns to beat Rockets
  • Predicted total: 215-220

This should be the easiest game of the night to peg. You won’t be able to bet on the Suns straight up, but you should feel pretty good about whatever spread emerges.

Phoenix is on the road, but the Rockets played on Sunday. That, and the Suns are still just 3.5 games out of the best record in the NBA.

The Suns are a bit more human on the road, but they’re in fine form with five straight wins and an 8-2 run over their last 10. Backed by the 6th best defense in The Association, I see little reason to doubt them here.

Oh, and they’re literally the best team in the league (32-16) against the spread, while Houston is the worst (15-133).

Best NBA Bets for Monday, April 5th

  • Thunder (+3) -110
  • Cavaliers vs. Spurs Under 216.5 (-110)

There aren’t a ton of games with pricing as I push this out, so for the most part, you’ll just have to go with my NBA predictions to formulate bets.

I do like OKC at +3, though. That game with the Pistons is basically a toss-up. However, they’ve been a bit more competitive overall on the year, and I think the game will be close.

Cleveland doesn’t score consistently, and they play slow. The Spurs should win, but the spread is too thick, and neither they or the Cavs put up a ton of points. I love the Under there, although I’d hunt for the best price possible at the best NBA betting sites.

Hopefully these NBA picks serve you well. Good luck, and enjoy the games!
