NBA Predictions and Best Bets – April 20, 2021

| April 20, 2021 5:22 am PDT

The hits keep on coming in the NBA, as Kevin Durant was (yet again) the latest casualty of the war on the hardwood.

KD won’t suit up on Tuesday when the Nets battle the Pelicans, and sports bettors will also want to keep an eye on the status of stars like Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, and Damian Lillard.

Whether those guys play or not, Tuesday’s slate is still a good one at first glance. Before I unleash my predictions and free NBA picks, let’s take a quick look at tonight’s schedule.

  • Orlando Magic vs. Atlanta Hawks
  • Brooklyn Nets vs. New Orleans Pelicans
  • Charlotte Hornets vs. New York Knicks
  • Los Angeles Clippers vs. Portland Trail Blazers
  • Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Sacramento Kings

The first thing I see when looking at this schedule? The injuries. The second? A whole lot of points.

I would be wary of betting too much cash on the Nets, Clippers, or Blazers tonight, just because it’s impossible to know who is sitting or playing just yet.

While that could be troublesome, you know there will be scoring on this slate. The Nets, Pels, Timberwolves, and Kings all play fast, and none of them play great defense.

To best gauge how to bet on the NBA tonight, let’s dive into my NBA predictions, upset picks, and best bets.

NBA Predictions for Tuesday, April 20th

  • Hawks to beat Magic
  • Pelicans to beat Nets
  • Knicks to beat Hornets
  • Clippers to beat Blazers
  • Kings to beat Timberwolves

The Hawks stand out as the most obvious bet, as they have a total mismatch against the Magic. I doubt their moneyline or spread will be too inviting, but they feel like the most obvious pick on the board.

Things get hairy after that, but the Pels are at home against a banged-up Nets team. The Over will be the best play there, but I like New Orleans in this one.

New York slows the game down and plays defense, and they’re at home against a shorthanded Charlotte team. They’re also on fire (six wins in a row), so I’m fine riding the wave here.

L.A. vs. Portland is a tough one, as the Clippers are always considering sitting their main guys, and Damian Lillard could be out again. Keep an eye on that situation, but a likely healthier Clippers team stands out as the better bet in this spot.

Lastly, the Kings are a dreadful 1-9 over their last 10 games.

Gross, but hey, they get the T’Wolves, who own the NBA’s worst record. In a battle of two unreliable teams, I slightly prefer Sac-town, but the top bet here is undeniably going to be the Over.

NBA Upsets to Target on Tuesday

  • Blazers (+245)

This doesn’t feel like the slate to bet on NBA underdogs. I originally had the Pels listed here, but due to Brooklyn being without two stars, they’re actually favored at home.

While I have the Clippers over Portland in tonight’s NBA predictions, the Blazers still feel like the best value pick.

Yes, they’re without Damian Lillard, but they still have a balanced team, are at home, and offer amazing value.

L.A., meanwhile, are notorious for sitting key players even in big spots. This might not be the day to bet big on NBA upset picks, but the one worth the trouble feels like Portland.

Best NBA Bets for Tuesday, April 20th

  • Magic (+12) -110
  • Nets vs. Pelicans Over 232.5 (-110)
  • Hornets (+5.5) -107

Pricing was slow to come out when I first pieced together today’s NBA picks, and the first bet I liked was Orlando at +12.5. That line has moved slightly, but it’s still thick enough for bettors to take advantage of.

Atlanta is at home and is the far better team here, but they’re not quite 100%, and they’re always at risk of sitting some guys. I think there’s a good chance the Magic keep this one somewhat close and get it within 12 points.

I like the Pels to top the Nets at home, but the big takeaway in that game is that it should feature a fast pace and basically zero defense. There are a couple of game totals worth targeting on Tuesday, but this is the one I’d go after the hardest.

Lastly, I do like the Knicks to get a home win and stay hot on Tuesday, but Charlotte at +5.5 is a bit too good to ignore. The Hornets are down up to three key players, but they’re still competitive, and are a respectable 20-18-1 ATS on the year.
