Moruti Mthalane vs. Sunny Edwards – April 30, 2021

South African legend Moruti Mthalane puts his IBF flyweight title on the line against Sunny Edwards at the Copper Box Arena, London, this Friday.
I’ll be previewing the fight for you today and providing online odds for anyone betting on Mthalane vs. Edwards. You will also find the best bets for the fight, as well as analysis around the matchup set to go down on April 30.
Mthalane, 38, is the bookies favorite to triumph despite coming in at 13 years Edwards’ senior. That has not deterred the youngster from plotting his win over the aging fighter. If Sunny were to win, he would join his brother Charlie as a world champion, making the pair just the second set of British brothers, after Liam and Callum Smith, to win world titles.
Ready to talk betting on this fight? Great. Keep reading for all of the above, plus my prediction for Mthalane vs. Edwards.
Mthalane or Edwards – Who Wins?
- Moruti Mthalane by KO/TKO
Anyone placing bets on Sunny Edwards to win, and British boxing fans as a whole, might be disappointed with my Mthalane-Edwards predictions and picks.
But I have to call things as I see them. From my perspective, I’m struggling to see anything other than a stoppage win for the 38-year-old in this fight. Without giving away why I’m predicting Mthalane to win just yet, his power and pressure will play a huge role in developing this fight.
Let’s check out the odds and best bets for Mthalane vs. Edwards before explaining my prediction for the fight.
Latest Odds for Mthalane vs. Edwards
The best online odds for Mthalane to beat Edwards I have found are over at BetOnline.
Priced at just -140, I think the price for the South African warrior to win is an absolute steal. Undefeated in almost 13 years and with a record of 39-2, the powerful “Babyface” is just far too good to ignore. The value is definitely with Mthalane in this fight, that’s for sure.
Edwards is an excellent fighter that is developing into a real problem at flyweight. But he is far too short for me at this price. I expected the betting line for Mthalane vs. Edwards to be relatively close, but I don’t believe this is a pick’em at all.
Edwards’ best days might be in front of him, but props to him for going for gold. Still, there is no value in his moneyline odds, and I don’t fancy him for any of the latest Mthalane vs. Edwards prop bets either.
Mthalane vs. Edwards Best Bets
The first of my best Mthalane vs. Edwards bets is the simple moneyline in favor of the champ.
I’m still surprised at how good that price is for a man that has only lost to the legendary Nonito Donaire since hitting the world level. That was back in November 2008, too. Since then, he has had everything his way.
Edwards’ lack of power might be a problem in this fight. Not only will it allow the South African to advance at will, but he has never lost a fight on the scorecards. Therefore, a wager on Mthalane to win by KO/TKO/DQ is worth it.
I think the cumulative damage will start to build up at the midway point of the fight. I expect it to get too much for Edwards by the 7th, and I believe a punt on Mthalane to win in Rounds 7-9 could be the way to go for the bigger odds.
Why Mthalane Beats Edwards
I think this might be just a tad too early for Sunny Edwards.
That’s taking nothing away from the Brit, who I like as a fighter. The Beddington boy hopes to bring his promoter, Frank Warren, a little bit of respite following some major losses for the stable. But unfortunately, he’s going to find Mthalane a significant step up in class from what he is used to.
Edwards took on Cameroon’s Thomas Essomba in his last fight in August 2020. Essomba was 3-4 before that scrap and pretty much basement level when compared with the champion. I can’t figure out how that fight was meant to prepare him for a guy of Mthalane’s ability.
My prediction and pick for Mthalane vs. Edwards is a win for the champion by TKO in Round 8.
