Montpellier vs. Nimes – Ligue 1, October 4, 2020

| September 30, 2020 12:26 pm PDT

Montpellier welcomes Nimes to La Mosson on Sunday, October 4, with the home side aiming to maintain their positive start to the 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign.

Michel Der Zakarian’s men find themselves third in the table after going unbeaten in their previous four outings. But at the other end of the standings, the Crocodiles’ four-game winless run has seen them drop to fourteenth.

I discuss the bookies’ odds before giving my Montpellier vs. Nimes prediction and betting pick.

Montpellier vs. Nimes Odds

Montpellier to Win 1.62
The Draw 3.80
Nimes to Win 5.10

As you can see, 10bet isn’t giving Nimes (5.10) much of a chance here. Jerome Arpinon’s men kicked off the season with a win, but a series of poor results makes them the clear outsider in this fixture.

Montpellier (1.62) has the opportunity to extend their unbeaten streak to five games on Sunday, and top online soccer betting sites seems to think the home side will get the job done.

Let’s take a closer look at both teams.

Montpellier vs. Nimes Preview

Montpellier’s sole defeat this term came against table-topping Rennes on Matchday 1. Since then, three wins and a draw have seen the Occitanie club keep pace with the early frontrunners.

La Paillade’s hot streak began with a hugely impressive 3-1 victory over Nice. After netting in the opening-day loss to Rennes, Gaeten Laborde opened the scoring against the Eagles before Daniel Congre bagged a second-half brace to cap off the win.

On Matchday 3, Teji Savanier was the star of the show, as his double downed Lyon. Andy Delort then became the third player this season to hit the target twice for Montpellier in a single game. A 4-1 thrashing of Angers saw the club register their third straight victory.

Michel Der Zakarian’s side could only manage a draw with Dijon last time out, although I don’t think the manager will be too disappointed with that result. It’s safe to say that Montpellier is ahead of schedule at the moment.

Nimes started the season with an excellent – and somewhat unexpected – 4-0 victory over Brest. However, subsequent defeats to Nantes (2-1) and Rennes (4-2) quickly put an end to the club’s optimism.

The Crocodiles have managed to ease the pressure in recent weeks by securing draws with Lyon and Lens. But there is no getting away from the fact that the team has made a poor start to the 2020/21 campaign.

Jerome Arpinon’s side is currently lingering just two points above the drop zone, and although it is still early days, Nimes is already in real danger of getting dragged into the relegation battle.

Montpellier vs. Nimes Prediction and Pick

Pick
  • Montpellier to Win
    1.62

It’s difficult to ignore Montpellier’s strong start to the season. Der Zakarian’s men have probably conceded more goals than expected, but it is worth noting that no team in the division has scored more goals than La Paillade this term.

On the flip side, Nimes is struggling. The Crocodiles avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, and I can see them fighting for their safety again this time around.

I’m expecting Nimes to put up a decent fight, but Montpellier should win this game.
