Monterrey vs. Club America – Liga MX, January 16, 2021
Monterrey and Club America will both be looking to build on opening-day victories when the two sides clash in Guadalupe on Saturday, January 16.
Rayados saw off Atlas last weekend, while the Eagles edged out Atletico San Luis to kick off the 2020/21 Liga MX Clausura season with a win.
After looking at the bookmakers’ odds, I provide my Monterrey vs. Club America prediction and betting pick.
Monterrey vs. Club America Odds
With the home advantage, Monterrey (2.00) is favored by 10bet to claim all three points on Saturday. Still, the price for the home win is high for a reason.
Club America (3.55) is the outsider side, although I wasn’t expecting the odds for the away win or the draw (3.40) to be as high as they are.
Monterrey vs. Club America Preview
Monterrey will probably still be hurting from November’s penalty shootout defeat to Puebla. However, Javier Aguirre’s men clearly didn’t let that affect them last weekend.
Rayados faced a tricky opening trip to Estadio Jalisco last weekend, but they managed to come away with a morale-boosting win to begin the new campaign.
Rogelio Funes Mori got his side off to the perfect start by scoring inside the first minute, with Monterrey creating the bulk of the goalscoring opportunities after that. On the stroke of half-time, Funes Mori completes his brace from the spot.
The prolific forward bagged six goals and three assists in 17 Liga MX Apertura outings last term. Thankfully for Monterrey, it doesn’t look like he plans on slowing down anytime soon.
Interestingly, new Rayados head coach Aguirre made over 100 appearances for Club America as a player. He will no doubt be desperate to get the better of his former side.
Following the end of the Apertura, America endured a disappointing spell in the CONCACAF Champions League. After advancing to the semi-finals despite a 1-0 loss to Atlanta United, the Eagles were beaten 3-1 by another MLS team – LAFC.
New boss Santiago Solari would have been looking for his players to hit the ground running when the Clausura got underway – and that’s exactly what happened.
The Eagles notched up 17 shots on their way to beating Atletico San Luis 2-1 last weekend, with Mauro Lainez opening the scoring midway through the first half. Nicolas Ibanez equalized, but Sebastian Cordova netted the winner late on.
With five goals and two assists in the Apertura, Cordova continues to cement his status as one of the best young players in the country.
Monterrey vs. Club America Pick
After winning their opening Clausura matches, both these sides will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten starts to the campaign on Saturday. With that in mind, this is likely to be a tight encounter.
In my eyes, Monterrey and Club America are pretty evenly matched at the moment. With the price for the tie at 3.40, I believe the draw is the best bet for this matchup.
