Monmouth Park Picks – Saturday, September 12, 2020

Monmouth Park pulls out all the stops Saturday with a 14-race schedule of maiden, allowance, and claiming races that also includes the Mr. Prospector Stakes (Grade III), named for one of the most influential sires (and sire of sires) in thoroughbred history.

This is an allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds running a distance of one mile and 70 yards for a purse of $50,000.

I like the third-favored (3/1) entry, King Koa, with Colby J. Hernandez in the irons. This six-year-old gelding moneyed 20 of his 40 career starts, winning 11 of them.

The longest odds in this race are 12/1, and the risk isn’t worth the reward, so let’s save our longshot money for later.

This is an allowance optional claiming race for New Jersey-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $62,500.

I’m sticking with the 1/1 morning line favorite here—Lil Miss Moppet, with Joe Bravo aboard. This four-year-old filly moneyed two of her four career starts, winning one.

At 20/1, Vinaigrette, ridden by Antonio A. Gallardo, represents a value show wager. This five-year-old mare finished in the money three of her five career starts and won one of them.

This is the Mr. Prospector Stakes (Grade III), a race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $100,000.

I like the heavily favored 8/5 entry for this stakes race—Mind Control, with Jose C. Ferrer in the irons. This four-year-old colt moneyed 11 of his 15 career starts, winning seven of them.

The longest odds in this race are 12/1, and I don’t see that horse finishing in the money here.

I also found profitable opportunities at these two race tracks for Saturday.
