Monmouth Park Picks – Saturday, August 29, 2020

| August 29, 2020 12:51 am PDT

The three richest races at Monmouth Park for Saturday turn out to be a handicap, a maiden special weight, and a graded stakes race—the Eatontown Stakes. And as if that weren’t enough, Monmouth has a grab-bag of 11 other races to keep your bankroll busy.

In case you plan to attend (Monmouth remains one of the few horse racing tracks open to spectators), here’s the weather you can expect: Thunderstorms (80% chance), with temperatures on the low 80s and 14 mph winds. Bring an umbrella. Waders might not be a bad idea, either. A canoe, maybe.

I think that’s enough non-betting-related info for today. Let’s get right to my picks and betting tips for Monmouth Park’s richest races.

Race 1 Picks

This is a starter handicap race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running distance of 1-1/8 miles on turf for a purse of $50,000.

While this could be a nail-biter of a finish, I’m sticking with the 5/2 morning line favorite—Stormy D, with top jockey Antonio A. Gallardo in the irons. This four-year-old filly finished in the money nine of her 17 career starts, five of them wins. She’ll see plenty of competition from the other ladies in this race, particularly because many of them are piloted some of the best jockeys at Monmouth Park.

There are a couple of legitimately 30/1 longshots in this race, but they are longshots for a reason: They’re highly unlikely to finish in the money. So let’s save ours.

  • Win: Stormy D 5/2

Race 4 Picks

This is a maiden special weight race for two-year-olds running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $59,375.

I’m definitely going with the 2/1 morning line favorite here: Jersey Jewel, ridden by Jomar Torres. This filly moneyed her single career start, something none of the of the other four morning line picks have done.

The longest odds in this race are 10/1 and I would consider a show bet here on Ask Around, with Isaac Castillo aboard. I base my suggestion on the good workout history of this filly, and also on the very wild-card nature of most maiden two-year-old races.

  • Win: Jersey Jewel 2/1
  • Show: Ask Around 10/1

Race 5 Picks

This is the Grade III Eatontown Stakes, a race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of 1-1/16 miles on turf for a purse of $150,000.

The 2/1 morning line favorite is the perfect match of winners—Nay Lady Nay, piloted by ace jockey Paco Lopez. This four-year-old filly leads this field with a record of five money finishes in seven career starts, four of those wins.

Depending on the jockey selected for the 15/1 outsider Repatriated Gem, you might consider a show bet here. This four-year-old filly moneyed seven of her 11 career starts, including two wins.

  • Win: Nay Lady Nay 2/1
  • Show: Repatriated Gem 15/1

Yes, I’ve found some profitable stakes wagers at a couple of other tracks on Saturday.
