Predictions and Best Bets for MLS Games on Saturday, September 4, 2021
There are only nine MLS matches this weekend, five of which take place on Saturday. In this post, I share my MLS predictions for Saturday, September 4, along with this weekend’s best MLS bets.
Before we stuck into my predictions for Saturday’s MLS games, let’s take a quick look at the schedule.
- Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Austin FC (7:00 ET)
- Orlando City vs. Columbus Crew (7:30 ET)
- Real Salt Lake vs. FC Dallas (8:00 ET)
- FC Cincinnati vs. Inter Miami (8:00 ET)
- San Jose Earthquakes vs. Colorado Rapids (10:00 ET)
The Whitecaps will go in search of their fourth straight MLS wins when they welcome Austin to Canada. Orlando, Inter Miami, San Jose, and Colorado will also be aiming to extend their own unbeaten streaks.
Let’s kick things off with my prediction for Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Austin FC before working our way through the rest of my MLS predictions and picks for Saturday, September 4.
Vancouver Whitecaps to Beat Austin FC
I think Marc Dos Santos can count himself pretty unfortunate to have been fired by the Vancouver hierarchy. The 44-year-old parted ways with the Whitecaps following their 4-3 Canadian Championship loss to Pacific FC, ending a three-year stay at the club.
The Caps are currently enjoying a nine-match unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer and head into Saturday’s clash on the back of three straight wins. They hammered Real Salt Lake 4-1 last weekend, enhancing their playoff hopes in the process.
Meanwhile, Austin was thrashed 5-3 by FC Dallas. The Texans have now lost seven of their previous nine MLS games and find themselves level with last-place Houston on 19 points as result.
Vancouver appears to be coping just fine under the guidance of interim head coach Vanni Sartini. With struggling Austin up next, the Canadians should secure a fourth straight victory on Saturday.
Orlando City and Columbus Crew to Draw
Orlando has only lost one of their last nine MLS outings. However, they have also managed to pick up just three wins in that time. Having registered five draws during that period, Oscar Pareja’s men are lucky to still be sitting second in the East.
Sure, the Lions have only lost four of their 21 matches this year. But if their Designated Players continue to misfire, they could find themselves sliding down the standings.
Columbus, on the other hand, will be hoping to move up the table after snapping a six-game losing streak last time out. A late Miguel Berry brace saw the Crew come from behind and beat Cincinnati 3-2 in the previous rounding, alleviating the pressure on head coach Caleb Porter.
It feels as though Columbus turned the corner last weekend. I’m not saying that Porter’s men will beat Orlando, but I can see them snatching a point off the draw specialists.
FC Dallas to Beat Real Salt Lake
In all honesty, it is becoming more and more difficult to predict the outcome of a Real Salt Lake game. After suffering back-to-back losses at the start of August, RSL picked up two straight wins. However, they have since lost consecutive games – underlining their inconsistency.
Following last weekend’s 4-1 thrashing at the hands of the Whitecaps, Freddy Juarez’s men have dropped to seventh in the West. With just three points separating them and eleventh-place LAFC, they are in real danger of missing out on the playoffs.
On the flip side, Dallas has made some improvements recently – after making a terrible start to the season! The Texans have only lost two of their previous eight games, picking up four wins and two draws along the way.
Jesus Ferreira and Ricardo Pepi both bagged a brace in last weekend’s 5-3 crushing of Austin. The former now has four goals and four assists this year, while the latter has netted 11 goals in 21 matches this season.
With Ferreira and Pepi in red-hot form, I’m backing the resurgent Toros to secure back-to-back wins on Saturday.
Inter Miami to Beat FC Cincinnati
If Dallas’ upturn is impressive, then Inter Miami’s turnaround is remarkable. The Herons suffered six straight defeats between May and July, falling to the foot of the standings. But since then, they have only recorded one loss in eight matches – sealing four wins and three draws in the process.
Across the past ten games, only three teams in the East have taken more points than Phil Neville’s side. Granted, they still find themselves seven points outside the top seven. But they are definitely headed in the right direction.
Cincinnati, on the other hand, is moving in the opposite direction. Jaap Stam’s men have failed to win any of their previous 11 encounters and head into the weekend on the back of successive defeats.
Funnily enough, second-bottom Cincy has the second-worst defensive record in the division. Gonzalo Higuain and co. will surely be licking their lips at the prospect of exposing Cincy’s leaky backline this weekend.
San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids to Draw
San Jose and Colorado have played a combined total of 41 MLS matches this year. Impressively, they have only recorded 11 losses between them. The Earthquakes have suffered seven defeats, while the Rapids have suffered four.
It is also worth noting that both teams are enjoying outstanding unbeaten runs at the moment. While San Jose is on a ten-game unbeaten streak, Colorado has only lost one of their previous 11 outings.
That said, the Quakes have drawn seven of their last ten matches. Although they have been tough to beat of late, they have struggled to turn one point into three. With that in mind, I can’t see them beating the Rapids on Saturday.
Given that Colorado also drew with Sporting KC last time out, I fully expect San Jose and Colorado to produce another draw in California.
My Top MLS Picks for Saturday, September 4
Here are my best MLS bets for Saturday, September 4. I have only selected two MLS picks for Saturday, but I’m confident they will land us a tasty profit!
Real Salt Lake vs. FC Dallas
Although I predicted that in-form Dallas will beat inconsistent Real Salt Lake, I don’t recommend betting on the winner of this matchup. Both sides have been unpredictable this year, so I suggest checking out the goal-based markets here.
In my eyes, the over 2.5 goals market is the best bet for Real Salt Lake vs. FC Dallas. 14 of RSL’s 21 games this season have dished up three or more goals – and that is almost 70%! You can almost double your money by backing over 2.5 goals, too.
- Pick: Over 2.5 Goals (1.90)
FC Cincinnati vs. Inter Miami
The bookies have priced Cincinnati at 2.25 to win this one, leaving Inter Miami as the underdog at 3.10. Yet, when you consider the recent form of these two sides, all the signs point towards an easy away win in Ohio.
The Herons have only lost one of their previous eight games, while Stam’s men have failed to win any of their last 11 matches. If Neville’s men bring their A-game to TQL Stadium, they should leave with all three points.
- Pick: Inter Miami to Win (3.10)
