Predictions and Best Bets for MLS Games on Saturday, October 2, 2021

Looking for some predictions and picks for Saturday’s MLS games? Look no further.

Week 29 of the 2021 Major League Soccer season gets underway this Saturday, October 2, with six clashes on the schedule. Let’s take a look at the fixture list before diving into my MLS predictions and best bets.

  • Austin FC vs. Real Salt Lake
  • CF Montreal vs. Atlanta United
  • FC Cincinnati vs. New York Red Bulls
  • Orlando City vs. DC United
  • FC Dallas vs. Minnesota United
  • Vancouver Whitecaps vs. San Jose Earthquakes

DC United went in search of three straight wins this weekend, visiting struggling Orlando. Elsewhere, the Caps and the Quakes face off in a vital playoff-chasing battle at BC Place.

Below, you can find my predictions for all MLS games on Saturday, October 2, along with a handful of free MLS betting picks.

Austin FC and Real Salt Lake to Draw

With fifth-place Real Salt Lake sitting 17 points ahead of last-place Austin FC in the Western Conference, this should be an easy win for the club from Utah.

When you did a little deeper, however, you can find plenty of reasons why the home side could avoid defeat on Saturday.

The Texans secured a hugely impressive 2-0 victory over LA Galaxy on home soil last weekend, picking up their sixth win of the season in the process. It is worth noting that four of their six victories have come at Q2 Stadium this year.

On the flip side, the Claret & Cobalt have only managed to win three of their 13 away games in 2021. Having suffered eight road losses this season, it’s fair to say that RSL struggles on its travels.

Regardless of the current standings, I can see Austin snatching a draw this weekend.

Atlanta United to Beat CF Montreal

Joseph Martinez netted his 100th goal for Atlanta United as the Five Stripes beat Inter Miami 1-0 on Wednesday. The Venezuelan striker reached the century milestone in just 125 appearances, meaning he averages 0.8 goals per game in an ATL UTD jersey.

Gonzalo Pineda’s men have now won four of their last five games – and eight of their previous ten! Can anyone stop them right now?

Well, I’m sure the likes of New England and Seattle would give the Five Stripes a run for their money. But I don’t expect CF Montreal to end Atlanta’s hot streak on Saturday.

Although the Canadians sit two points and two places behind Atlanta in the Eastern Conference, they have lost three of their last five MLS outings and head into Week 29 on the back of a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of the Revs.

This will likely be a tense encounter, but I’m confident that in-form Atlanta will come out on top.

New York Red Bulls to Beat FC Cincinnati

Having notched a four-game unbeaten streak, the Red Bulls need an easy fixture to keep their playoff hopes alive. Thankfully for them, FC Cincinnati is up next.

The Ohio outfit parted ways with head coach Jaap Stam earlier this week, leaving Tyrone Marshall in temporary charge. Unfortunately, he was unable to prevent a 3-2 loss to Toronto FC on Wednesday.

Cincy currently sits two points adrift at the bottom of the East, having lost seven of their last eight games. Oh, and did I mention they have only managed to win one of their previous 17?

The Red Bulls find themselves 11 points clear of Cincy. More importantly, they are eight points outside the playoff spots with a game in hand over seventh-place Orlando.

This matchup provides RBNY with the perfect opportunity to edge closer to the top seven – and I can’t see them passing up that chance.

DC United to Beat Orlando City

As long as Ola Kamara continues to score goals, DC United will keep on climbing the standings.

The Norwegian forward netted his seventeenth goal in as many MLS games as the Black-and-Red dispatched Minnesota 3-1 in midweek. He also missed a penalty, although Julian Gressel and Junior Moreno made up for that.

Hernan Losada’s men have now won three of their past four matches, scoring over 2.5 goals in each of those victories. As a result, they are flying high in third – one point clear of seventh-place Orlando.

By contrast, the Lions have lost four of their previous five games. They finally ended a four-match losing streak by holding Nashville to a draw on Wednesday, but they are still in a precarious position.

Given the contrasting form of these two sides, I’m backing Kamara and co. to seal a fourth win in five games this weekend.

Minnesota United to Beat FC Dallas

Predicting the outcome of a Minnesota United game has become a tricky task of late. Across the past six outings, the Loons have picked up three wins and three losses – underling their inconsistency.

Luckily for MLS bettors, predicting the outcome of an FC Dallas game is a whole lot easier.

Not only have the Toros lost each of their previous three matches, but they have also won just one of their last ten. Maybe firing Luchi Gonzalez wasn’t a good idea, after all!

It is also worth remembering that Dallas has the worst defensive record in the West. The Texans have allowed a colossal 47 goals in 28 games this year, conceding at a rate of almost 1.7 goals per game.

Minnesota, meanwhile, boasts one of the best defensive records in the division. Only the top three teams have conceded fewer goals than Adrian Heath’s men, so I’m confident they will get the better of Dallas.

Vancouver Whitecaps to Beat San Jose Earthquakes

The Whitecaps have won eight of their 26 MLS matches this year. Notably, seven of those victories have come on home soil.

In fact, the Canadians have won four of their previous five league encounters at BC Place – overcoming LAFC, RSL, Austin, and Dallas in the space of a month.

As for the Earthquakes, they have only managed to win four of their 13 away outings this season. The Californians have struggled on their travels throughout 2021 – and they are likely to struggle again this weekend.

Eighth-place Vancouver leads tenth-place San Jose by one point in standings. If the Caps win on Saturday, they will open up a four-point gap between them and San Jose and could even move into the playoff zone.

The incentive for the Canadians is massive here, so I expect them to get the job done on home soil.

Best MLS Bets for Saturday, October 2

My MLS picks for Saturday concern a bookies’ underdog winning away, two low-scoring sides producing less than three goals, and a home victory at 2.15.

If that sounds good to you, I suggest you keep reading!

CF Montreal vs. Atlanta United

Not only have the Five Stripes won four of their last five games, but they have also won eight of their previous ten. With Martinez in red-hot form, I’m confident Atlanta will dispatch Montreal on Saturday.

At 2.15, Montreal is actually the home favorite here. However, the Canadians have lost three of their past five MLS outings.

Considering you can triple your money, backing high-flying Atlanta to beat off-form Montreal is an opportunity too good to miss.

  • Pick: Atlanta United to Win (3.00)

FC Dallas vs. Minnesota United

Regardless of their wretched run, FC Dallas (2.10) is the bookies’ favorite to win this one. As a result, Minnesota United (3.25) heads to Texas as the outsider.

Neither side has been involved in many high-scoring matches this year. In fact, only 11 of Minnesota’s 26 games have produced three or more goals (42%).

I can see these two teams dishing up a relatively cagey encounter on Saturday. With that in mind, I recommend steering clear of the moneyline markets and backing under 2.5 goals.

  • Pick: Under 2.5 Goals (2.20)

Vancouver Whitecaps vs. San Jose Earthquakes

As I mentioned, Vancouver has enjoyed great success on home soil this season. Seven of the Whitecaps’ eight victories have come at BC Place, with four wins coming in their past five home matches.

On the flip side, the Earthquakes have won just four of their 13 away outings in 2021. They have also conceded more goals than they’ve scored on their travels, meaning Vancouver should claim all three points on Saturday.

  • Pick: Vancouver Whitecaps to Win (2.15)
