MLB Predictions and Best Bets – September 8, 2020

| September 8, 2020 12:33 am PDT

After some light MLB action on Monday, the baseball betting schedule balloons to 18 games on Tuesday.

There’s a ton of bets to consider for this huge slate, but I’ll be condensing my focus to the following contests.

  • Red Sox vs. Phillies (Game 1)
  • Royals vs. Indians
  • Athletics vs. Astros (Game 1)
  • Yankees vs. Blue Jays
  • Rockies vs. Padres
  • Brewers vs. Tigers
  • Reds vs. Cubs

There are some double headers on this slate, so be sure to be careful which games you bet on for the series that will be playing twice today.

That’s both just to get the bet right for the correct game, but also to remember to keep an eye on probable pitchers and lineup news. It can be a bit dicey, but there are two games I like that will involve double headers.

Let’s take a closer look at my favorite games to target, as I break down my MLB predictions and top betting picks for Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

Red Sox vs. Phillies Predictions

  • Phillies to beat Red Sox
  • Predicted total: 8.5-9

Martin Perez managed to keep it together in his last start, but he’s got a way tougher matchup against a loaded Phillies lineup. I expect him to get shelled, while Boston may not have the right lefties to get to Zach Eflin in this spot.

The Over is still in jeopardy here, but I love the Phillies to get the win, and you can confidently hammer their -1.5 run line.

Royals vs. Indians Predictions

  • Indians to beat Royals
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Triston McKenzie looks to continue his tear on the majors. He’s been sensational to start his career, going 2-0 with a blistering 1.69 ERA.

He’ll get rocked at some point, but I tend to doubt it comes at home against a largely punchless Royals team (23rd in homers, 25th in runs). Cleveland should win here, although the Indians may have enough offense to push this toward the Over.

Athletics vs. Astros Predictions

  • Astros to beat Athletics
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Houston is still banged up, but they are at home and have Zack Greinke on the mound for game one on Tuesday. This series with Oakland is quite crucial to their chances of snagging first place in the AL West, and I think they get things started off on the right foot.

Mike Minor (0-5, 5.94 ERA) hasn’t been good this year, and I find it hard to believe he rediscovers his form in a tough road matchup.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays Predictions

  • Yankees to beat Blue Jays
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

The pinstripes are not at 100% and are sliding these days, but they have a winnable series with Toronto and need to escape victorious.

J.A. Happ isn’t really an asset for the Yanks these days, but this is a matchup he can potentially dominate. On the other side, New York still has enough power to get to Taijuan Walker and pick up a much-needed win.

Rockies vs. Padres Predictions

  • Padres to beat Rockies
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Mike Clevinger wasn’t amazing in his Padres debut last week, but I like his chances to deliver in his second try. He’ll be at home in a nice pitcher’s park, while the Padres could make quick work fo Chi Chi Gonzalez.

San Diego has been the far better team, and given Colorado’s traditional struggles away from Coors Field, the Padres feel like a lock in this spot.

Brewers vs. Tigers Predictions

  • Brewers to beat Tigers
  • Predicted total: 8.5-9

Milwaukee continues to hover right around .500, but they could really use this series with the Tigers to push themselves up the NL Central ladder.

Spencer Turnbull got slapped around by the Brew Crew in his last start, and he could be in trouble again in a tough park for pitchers. I like the Brewers here, and the Over is also a fine secondary bet.

Reds vs. Cubs Predictions

  • Cubs to beat Reds
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

One more great MLB game to bet on goes down at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs host the rival Reds. Cincinnati is the understandable underdog here, and I love Chicago’s lefties against Tyler Mahle.

Mahle actually whiffed the Cubs intro oblivion the last time he faced them (11 strikeouts), but the matchup really doesn’t work in his favor.

Best MLB Bets for Tuesday, September 8th

  • Yankees to beat Blue Jays (-101)
  • Yankees vs. Blue Jays Over 10 (-125)
  • Brewers to Win (-121)
  • Cubs to Win (-113)

I am all about this Yankees vs. Jays game. On one hand, I think Toronto can smoke J.A. Happ. On the other, I still think the Yanks stop the bleeding and get the win here. It will be due to both sides sounding off, which will make this game a lot of fun, and also get us to the Over.

Elsewhere, you could just ride my MLB predictions to wins from the Brewers and Cubs. I like the matchup for both of these teams, while the Over is probably in play for both contests, as well.

Milwaukee at +125 to win by two runs is on my radar, but I’ll play it safe here and keep these MLB picks as straight up winners.
