MLB Predictions and Best Bets – September 29, 2020

| September 28, 2020 11:35 pm PDT

The 2020 MLB regular season is in the bag, but we can keep betting on baseball. After a one-day break on Monday, we get right back to the real thing, with four Wild Card games kicking off.

These games are all staggered due to the importance of playoff baseball, but they’re all here for us to bet on. They also are pretty crucial to helping set up the playoffs as things move forward.

Here’s a quick look at the games we can bet on today.

  • Astros vs. Twins
  • White Sox vs. Athletics
  • Blue Jays vs. Rays
  • Yankees vs. Indians

Normally I’m selective with which MLB games I want to focus on and suggest bets for, but on Tuesday, this is the entire schedule.

This is about as intense as it gets, too, as every team in the first round of the 2020 MLB playoffs is racing to two wins in a best-of-three series. Today is game one of those scenarios for eight teams.

For insight as to how to bet on said contests, read on for Tuesday’s MLB predictions and top betting picks.

Astros vs. Twins Predictions

  • Astros to beat Twins
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Houston is below .500 and probably doesn’t belong in the 2020 MLB playoffs, but once you put a team as talented as them in the mix, things can get wild.

Their offense has been tough to trust all year, but they’re still stacked. It’s hard to get off of them here, even though Kenta Maeda (2.70 ERA) has been amazing all year.

I think Zack Greinke can be good enough here and the Astros will get enough runs to edge out the Twins in game one. Houston to win looks like a nice value bet, but we can also probably still bank on the Under in a tense pitching matchup.

White Sox vs. Athletics Predictions

  • White Sox to beat Athletics
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

Oakland is a dangerous fly ball offense, but this matchup sets up well for Chicago. Lucas Giolito could dominate them in game one, while Chicago’s never-ending string of dangerous righties could spell trouble for Jesus Luzardo.

I like Chicago in this spot, while the power on both sides points to the Over.

Blue Jays vs. Rays Predictions

  • Rays to beat Blue Jays
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Toronto is actually a little sneaky here. They’ve got nothing to lose, they know the Rays, and they have the right-handed power to get to Blake Snell.

Even so, Snell can also whiff them for days, and he’s been rock solid in 2020. Matt Shoemaker has been good enough to keep you interested in the Jays, but I won’t bite today. I’ll take the Rays and the Under.

Yankees vs. Indians Predictions

  • Yankees to beat Indians
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

Here’s the pitching matchup of the day, as Gerrit Cole (7-3, 2.84 ERA) and Shane Bieber (8-1, 1.63 ERA) could be in for an epic duel.

Bieber probably wins the stand-off between these two aces, but New York still has the more imposing offense, as well as the better bullpen. Cleveland is more dangerous than anyone cares to admit in this spot, but I can’t get away from the Yanks here.

Best MLB Bets for Tuesday, September 29th

  • Astros to Win (+150)
  • Astros vs. Twins Over 7.5 (-105)
  • White Sox to Win (-120)
  • White Sox vs. Athletics Over 7.5 (-105)
  • Rays (-1.5) +105
  • Yankees to Win (-104)
  • Yankees vs. Indians Over 6.5 (+100)

Maybe I am still clinging to the explosive play that we got in this 60-game season, but I am all about the Over in most of these matchups. Yes, the pitching is amazing, but so are the offenses.

Some of these aces still give up hard contact and have home run issues, too, while not everyone’s bullpen is that scary. I think we might get a little more scoring here than the oddsmakers have things priced as.

On top of that, I like the Astros as the underdog play of the day, while the Rays covering two runs is another nice value. Chicago to win and New York to win feel like good bets, and you’re getting those at nice prices, as well.

It’s playoff baseball, so anything can happen. That said, there could be a ton of value at hand, and this is just the first slate!

Whatever you do, I wish you luck. For more MLB betting picks and advice, hit up our sports betting picks page.
