MLB Predictions and Best Bets – October 5, 2020

| October 4, 2020 11:47 pm PDT

The 2020 MLB playoffs return on Monday, as the ALDS and NLDS get underway on October 5th. Bettors got a nice break from betting on baseball over the weekend, but if I’m being honest, it felt like too big of a gap.

Thankfully, we can get our wallets out and throw down some more cash on MLB playoff action. Here are the two games we’re working with for today’s slate.

  • Astros vs. Athletics
  • Yankees vs. Rays

This is a very interesting round of playoff baseball, as we get division rivalries playing out before us with the Astros and A’s facing off, and the Yankees taking on the Rays.

How will things unfold in game one of these series? Let’s dive in for our MLB predictions and top betting picks for Monday, October 5, 2020.

Astros vs. Athletics Predictions

  • Astros to beat Athletics
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

We have two familiar foes here, as Oakland finally edged out the Astros to win the AL West, but still have some demons to exorcise here if they want to advance.

I don’t love their chances in game one, as Lance McCullers Jr. is a tough out. In his lone showdown with the A’s this year, he went six innings with seven strikeouts and just one earned run.

Chris Bassitt is on the other side and does a solid job with run prevention, but he doesn’t miss bats at the same rate. I tend to trust a veteran Houston offense a bit more here, as well.

I’ll take the Astros to win, but we’re probably in for another classic playoff pitcher’s duel. The Under is a solid secondary wager in this spot.

Yankees vs. Rays Predictions

  • Yankees to beat Rays
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

The other game is a playoff battle that stems from the AL East, which the Rays stole from the Yanks this year. Tampa Bay was the better team as a whole on the season, but when you compare the two, it’s tough to confidently say they’re winning this series.

That’s how I feel about game one, as the Yankees are healthy and obviously have the more imposing lineup. They also have Gerrit Cole (7-3, 2.84 ERA), who has been on fire over his last five outings – quite literally ever since Tampa Bay clocked him for four runs back on August 31st.

I doubt Cole has forgotten, and we know what he’s capable of.

Blake Snell could help this game stay tight on the other side, but he’s also a lefty going up against a loaded Yankees offense. Their power and this matchup aren’t a good mix. I like New York and I’ll tentatively lend a cursory glance toward the Over.

Best MLB Bets for Monday, October 5th

  • Astros to Win (+130)
  • Astros vs. Athletics Under 8 (+105)
  • Yankees to Win (-145)
  • Yankees (-1.5) +115
  • Yankees vs. Rays Over 7 (-115)

Obviously the pickings are relatively slim on a two-game MLB betting slate, so you either need to go with your gut, or just condense your wagering a tad.

That being said, I really like the Yankees and Astros here, which points me in the direction of the best listed above. I like Houston to win, but the pitching and lethargic offenses probably combine for a tight, low-scoring affair.

New York’s game has the superior pitching matchup, but it boasts way more power. Gerrit Cole should dominate, but he does give up some hard contact, so a dinger or two could get away from him and contribute to the Over.

We know what the Yankees are capable of, though, so the betting revolves around them winning, and if their bats come out to play, the Over may be the safest bet of the day.
