MLB Predictions and Best Bets – April 5, 2021

| April 5, 2021 7:06 am PDT

It’s a pretty fun time to be a sports bettor. With MLB back in full swing, there is something to bet on literally every single day, and usually at all times during the day.

Hopefully my daily MLB picks help you out. Monday offers a loaded 13-game slate, and numerous bets look good right away.

Before I single out which wagers I like the most, take a look at the schedule for April 4th, 2021.

  • Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers
  • Toronto Blue Jays vs. Atlanta Braves
  • Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Indians
  • Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees
  • Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds
  • Louis Cardinals vs. Miami Marlins
  • New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies
  • Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox
  • Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs
  • Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels
  • Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Oakland Athletics
  • Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners
  • San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres

Two things stand out right away; this is a pretty big slate, and the pitching isn’t elite as a whole.

That means bettors can pick their spots, but it should also make for plenty of scoring. The fact that a lot of these games are in hitter-friendly spots only increases the chances of games hitting the Over more often than not on Monday.

With that said, I’ll still be somewhat selective with my MLB bets. Let’s dig deeper with Monday’s MLB predictions and top betting picks.

Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers Predictions

  • Twins to beat Tigers
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Matt Shoemakers gets the ball for Minnesota, who remain on the road against a seemingly improved Tigers squad.

The pitching isn’t amazing for either side, and Minnesota’s lineup is more watered down these days. They’re still explosive, though, and they’re the better team with the slightly better pitcher.

I like the Twins by a hair, but the Over stands out given the volatile pitcher, and Minnesota’s raw power.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Texas Rangers Predictions

  • Blue Jays to beat Rangers
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Toronto has impressed early on, as they held their own in a tough series at Yankee Stadium. Now they head to Texas, where they battle the beatable Rangers.

Steven Matz toes the rubber for the Jays, and should give Toronto the edge they need. Texas isn’t a team to trust on offense, regardless, but they’re not really equipped to handle good southpaws.

Toronto and the Over look like good bets here.

Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals Predictions

  • Nationals to beat Braves
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Atlanta is usually a good bet, but they’re on the road against Max Schzerzer. They haven’t been able to get much going so far, and it stands to reason this isn’t the spot where they’ll blow up.

The pitching edge lies with the Nats, and this is actually their first game. I like their chances against the beatable Drew Smyly, but Mad Max’s presence keeps me interested in the Under.

Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Indians Predictions

  • Royals to beat Indians
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Kansas City heads to Cleveland to take on the Tribe. Both of these teams have gotten off to very different and unexpected starts, but the Royals actually look like the team to back here.

Cleveland’s lineup isn’t as scary as it once was, and Danny Duffy could be a problem for an offense that is best utilized against right-handed pitching.

Kansas City, meanwhile, has a slew of viable righties that could get to Logan Allen in this one. I like the Royals and the Over.

Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees Predictions

  • Yankees to beat Orioles
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

The O’s have looked fantastic during a hot start, and they take a perfect 3-0 record into Yankee Stadium on Monday.

It’s always possible Baltimore stays ablaze, but they’re on the road yet again, and Jorge Lopez is their gun on the mound.

I trust far more in Jordan Montgomery, and the pinstripes in general. The park and power involved still has me into the Over, of course.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds Predictions

  • Reds to beat Pirates
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

The Pirates see a nice park boost when they battle the Reds on Monday, but their offense remains punchless.

Cincinnati packs the punch here, while the pitching is nothing to get excited about. The Over stands out as the main bet here, if only because the park is good for hitting.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Miami Marlins Predictions

  • Cardinals to beat Marlins
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

That’s the opposite for this game in Miami, as the Cardinals and Marlins will wage war in a pitcher’s haven.

Daniel Ponce de Leon and Trevor Rogers aren’t elite pitchers, but they should be good enough to take advantage of their setting. St. Louis is the better team and worth backing, but the best bet figures to be the Under.

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies Predictions

  • Mets to beat Phillies
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

New York had to wait to get their 2021 MLB season started, but they’ll kick things off in Philly against the Phillies.

Philadelphia is very dangerous at home in a hitter’s paradise, but you have to downgrade them in an impossible spot against Jacob deGrom.

New York’s offense is in a better spot, as they get a massive park upgrade, and face Matt Moore. I love the Mets in this one.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox Predictions

  • Rays to beat Red Sox
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

Boston was asleep for much of their opening series with Baltimore, so it’s worth wondering how they’ll look against the Rays.

Tampa Bay is only throwing Michael Wacha at them, but their offense is in a nice spot. The Rays get a great park boost at Fenway, and their lefties could tee off against Nick Pivetta

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs Predictions

  • Cubs to beat Brewers
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

The Brew Crew has been competitive to start the year, but their offense has left a lot to be desired.

I don’t think much of the Cubs, but Milwaukee has to take on their rival on the road, and Trevor Williams can grind out a win in this spot.

Just check which way the wind is blowing before deciding how to bet on this game’s total.

Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels Predictions

  • Astros to beat Angels
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

The probable pitchers aren’t yet known for this one, so it’ll be a tough one to peg at first glance. The Halos have a solid lineup and are at home, but betting against Houston always feels dicey.

The Astros have gotten off to a hot start and got my readers a +130 win on Friday. I’ll go right back to the well and roll with the more talented Astros to get another win.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Oakland Athletics Predictions

  • Athletics to beat Dodgers
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

L.A. made it out of Coors Field alive, and on Monday they will take on the A’s in Oakland.

The park downgrade is severe, so there is slight concern of hitter fatigue here. Frankie Montas is also a pretty good pitcher, and the A’s know how to work around the park.

Dustin May is a fine young pitcher, but he’s going up against an extreme fly ball offense on the road. I think Oakland stands out as a sneaky upset play here.

Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners Predictions

  • White Sox to beat Mariners
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Carlos Rodon toes the rubber for the White Sox, who will be looking to heat up following a slow start to the year.

The White Sox have hitting for days, so I think the run support will be there, as their endless string of righties faces off with left-handed hurler Justus Sheffield.

Chicago looks like the play here, and even though the park can be problematic, the Over also looks appealing.

San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres Predictions

  • Padres to beat Giants
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Lastly, I’ll go with the Padres to stay hot at home against the Giants.

San Diego doesn’t really have the edge against visiting righty Anthony DeSclafani, but they’re just a lot to deal with, regardless.

The pitching edge does lean toward the Giants, but the Padres are at home, and are notoriously nasty. The Under is a fine secondary play given San Francisco’s weak offense, and the park.

Best MLB Bets for Monday, April 5th

  • Twins to Win (-142)
  • Twins vs. Tigers Over 8.5 (-115)
  • Blue Jays to Win (-145)
  • Rays to Win (-118)
  • Cubs to Win (-110)

This is a nice slate with a lot of options, but I’m combining my MLB predictions and the pricing at BetOnline to produce five MLB bets I really like.

Minnesota is always dangerous, and I like them against the Tigers. Their -142 price is cheap for how good they can be, and that game should have plenty of runs.

Toronto looks good in the early going, too, and I think they can keep it going against the Rangers. The pitching is a borderline wash, but the Jays have a talented offense worth getting behind.

Boston doesn’t look very imposing these days, and the Rays get a big park boost. They also have superior pitching, so Tampa Bay really stands out at just -118.

Chicago is at home against a watered down Brewers lineup. The pitching is a wash, but the Cubs have the scarier offense right now.
