MLB Predictions and Best Bets for April 2, 2021

| April 2, 2021 6:44 am PDT

After a really fun first day of MLB action, bettors can relax a bit. Friday offers up a tiny seven-game slate just before the floodgates burst back open for the weekend.

Let’s see which games we’ll be able to bet on for April 2nd, 2021.

  • Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox
  • Tampa Bay Rays vs. Miami Marlins
  • Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies
  • Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels
  • Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics
  • San Francisco Giants vs. Seattle Mariners
  • Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres

This schedule is boosted by the O’s game, which was PPD yesterday. Keep an eye for weather concerns, as well as any league protocol cancellations.

That said, this is a tidy schedule we can go to work with and really just pick a few spots to fall in love with.

With that, let’s get into Friday’s MLB predictions and top betting picks.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox Predictions

  • Red Sox to beat Orioles
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

The first game of this series was scheduled for yesterday but got rained out. Probable pitchers haven’t been announced as I write this, but there’s a good chance the original starters see their spot in the rotation skipped.

I think that favors Boston, who don’t have a great rotation, but it’s certainly better than Baltimore’s.

I’m not super excited to pick a side here, of course. Boston is the safer bet at home, but with so much power and suspect pitching – especially at Fenway – the Over is what stands out the most.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Miami Marlins Predictions

  • Rays to beat Marlins
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

On the opposite side of things, bettors should prepare for a pitching duel in Miami. The Marlins play host to the Rays, where Pablo Lopez and Ryan Yarbrough go at it.

I lean toward Tampa Bay here. They have the better pitcher, and their offense is much more reliable.

That said, the Under is what looks good in this one. Both offenses can be inconsistent, the pitching is solid, and the park isn’t kind to the long ball.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies Predictions

  • Dodgers to beat Rockies
  • Predicted total: 11-11.5

Then you have Coors Field, which begs for homers. The pitching is really strong here, with Trevor Bauer set to make his Dodgers debut.

L.A. is again favored in a potential shootout, as Bauer gives them a massive edge but is likely to give up some runs in this volatile setting.

I don’t trust Antonio Senzatela in this spot at all. Give me the Dodgers and the Over.

Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels Predictions

  • White Sox to beat Angels
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

This looks like another pitcher’s battle. Dallas Kuechel doesn’t miss bats, but he is elite when it comes to managing games.

Chicago is not an easy assignment for Andrew Heaney on the other side, of course, as he has issues with righty power.

I think that gives the White Sox the edge, but this park is pretty good for pitchers, and both pitchers are more than passable. I like Chicago and the Under.

Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics Predictions

  • Astros to beat Athletics
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Houston took a big step back last year following their cheating scandal, but I think they bounce back in 2021.

That could start in Oakland, and on Friday, they face a young hurler in Jesus Luzardo. He could easily be in for a breakout year, but drawing a stacked Astros team is a tough assignment.

Getting the Astros at +130 feels like a steal, although given the park and the pitching, the Under might be the best bet.

San Francisco Giants vs. Seattle Mariners Predictions

  • Giants to beat Mariners
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Johnny Cueto gets the ball in San Francisco’s second game of the year, and I don’t really think he needs to turn back the clock to dice up the Mariners.

Seattle has some nice young talent, but this isn’t a scary offense. The park shouldn’t hurt Cueto, either, while the Giants’ righties have a plus matchup against Yusei Kikuchi.

I hate it, but the Giants and the Under look like solid plays.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres Predictions

  • Padres to beat Diamondbacks
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

Lastly, we get a rivalry clash between Arizona and San Diego. This is another good park for pitchers, so Blake Snell’s debut figures to go pretty well.

He’s an elite southpaw, and he may be too much for the D’Backs to handle.

San Diego also has an elite offense, and Merrill Kelly isn’t an arm to be feared. San Diego has the edge by a mile here, but the pitching and park still have me leaning toward the Under.

Best MLB Bets for Friday, April 2nd

Orioles vs. Red Sox Over 9.5 +100
Rays to Win -112
Astros to Win +130

This is a smaller MLB betting slate, so as you can imagine, the list of bets to get really excited about shouldn’t be too long.

You can rely on my MLB predictions for any other bets you like, but the three MLB picks listed above are the ones I’d focus on.

The Over in the Boston game is one of my favorite bets. It isn’t even priced poorly, and when you start looking at the pitching, offenses, and park, it feels so obvious.

Houston is an elite value, as well, and the Rays should get the win against the Marlins. If you want more bets, just check out my analysis above, and take your favorite wagers over to the best MLB betting sites.
