MLB Predictions and Best Bets – April 14, 2021

| April 14, 2021 5:29 am PDT

Another beautiful MLB betting slate is upon us, weather permitting. Quite a few games have been PPD in recent days, so keep an eye on the skies before finalizing any bets.

Losing is bad, but seeing bets not even have a chance is always a bit deflating.

That said, Wednesday’s baseball schedule looks pretty fun. Let’s see who is in action on April 14th, 2021.

  • New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays
  • Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals
  • Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers
  • Los Angeles Angels vs. Kansas City Royals
  • Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins
  • Cincinnati Reds vs. San Francisco Giants
  • San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles
  • Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros
  • Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets
  • Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays
  • Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves
  • Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago White Sox
  • Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

There is a lot of bad blood on this slate, and that makes for must-see baseball. It could make for must-betting baseball, too.

Of course, you shouldn’t stretch yourself too thin. Betting on baseball should be fun and rewarding, and getting a hand in every single game can be a big mistake.

With that, I’ll hand out my MLB predictions and then isolate my favorite bets in Wednesday’s MLB picks.

New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays Predictions

  • Yankees to beat Blue Jays
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

Corey Kluber got lit up in his last start, but he still gives the Yanks the pitching edge in a tense tilt against the rival Jays.

Ross Stripling can be had, and he isn’t likely to throw flames against a loaded New York lineup.

The Yanks and the Over look good here.

Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals Predictions

  • Cardinals to beat Nationals
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

The pitching is a big bowl of “meh” as Joe Ross and Adam Wainwright prepares to face off at Busch Stadium on Wednesday.

I’ll favor the Cardinals, who have the more powerful lineup and are at home.

Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers Predictions

  • Brewers to beat Cubs
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

The Cubs will always have a shot here for three reasons; they get a nice park upgrade, Milwaukee’s offense isn’t very scary, and they know the Brewers as well as anyone.

That said, the Brewers should provide nice value at home. Corbin Burnes has also been lights out (0.73 ERA) this year.

I’ll side with Burnes and the Brew Crew at home.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Kansas City Royals Predictions

  • Angels to beat Royals
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Griffin Canning is a lot better than he’s shown so far in 2021, so this feels like a get right spot for him. Kansas City is at home, and Brad Keller can’t possibly continue being this bad, but it’s tough to side with the Royals.

Mike Trout and co. should do just enough to get a nice road win against an inferior opponent as the Halos continue their hot start.

Boston Red Sox vs. Minnesota Twins Predictions

  • Twins to beat Red Sox
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

Kenta Maeda looks to keep things clean on Wednesday, as he carries a healthy 2.61 ERA into a tough matchup with Boston.

The Red Sox have looked dangerous this year, but I tend to fear them more against southpaws. On the other side is Nathan Eovaldi, who can be passable, but isn’t scary against a talented Minnesota lineup.

Maeda pushes the Twins to the win, but the power on both sides keeps the Over on the table.

Cincinnati Reds vs. San Francisco Giants Predictions

  • Giants to beat Reds
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

The park and the pitching are good enough here to bet the Under without too much fuss. Johnny Cueto looked sharp at his first start of the year, and Tyler Mahle also looked very good.

I do think the Giants have enough lefty sticks to get to Mahle, who struggles against that side of the plate. It won’t be a beating, though, and the Under is probably the priority here.

San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

  • Pirates to beat Padres
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

This is a very weird spot. Pittsburgh is not good offensively, but they’re at home, and they know Joe Musgrove very well.

Musgrove feels like a weird guy to bet against, considering the dude just made history.

This could be a classic “coming back down to earth” moment, as the Pirates would love to give him a harsh homecoming. Musgrove should be eyeing some revenge, of course, and this park isn’t ideal for scoring.

All things considered, the Under stands out as the best bet, but the Pirates feel like a sneaky play.

Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles Predictions

  • Mariners to beat Orioles
  • Predicted total: 9-9.5

Justin Dunn isn’t great, and at this point, it’s pretty arguably Matt Harvey is even worse. These two hurlers get to face off in the not-so comforting Camden Yards, so yeah, I anticipate some fireworks.

Seattle is tentatively the pick here, but the best bet is going to be the Over. Baltimore has some pop, but the park and pitching is the sales pitch in this one.

Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros Predictions

  • Astros to beat Tigers
  • Predicted total: 7-7.5

I’m not expecting a ton of scoring here. Lance McCullers Jr. got 2021 off to a roaring start, and he will likely keep it rolling against a weak Tigers offense.

Detroit pushes Michael Fulmer onto the mound, and he is usually pretty good at limiting damage. The pitching and park highlight the Under here.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets Predictions

  • Phillies to beat Mets
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

This feels like a good spot to hammer the Phillies. They’ve looked good overall so far, and they should be able to rake against David Peterson – he of the 13.50 ERA.

Zack Wheeler also gets the ball for Philly, and he’s looked sharp (2.31 ERA) through two starts. I’d imagine he keeps it going as the Phillies get a nice road win.

Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays Predictions

  • Rays to beat Rangers
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Rich Hill didn’t get off to the start he’d hoped this year, but he has an excellent chance to right the ship at home against a bad Texas lineup.

The Rangers have some power, but I’d fear them much more against right-handed pitching.

This pitcher-friendly park only aids Hill, and Kohei Arihara doesn’t look like a scary pitcher for Tampa Bay to face, either.

Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves Predictions

  • Braves to beat Marlins
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Nick Neidert was rock solid in his first start, but I find it hard to believe he keeps it going on the road against the Braves.

Atlanta is the sole reason I don’t mind the Over here, but Charlie Morton figures to work against that bet again. The fish are best used against southpaws, and Morton just isn’t a guy who gets blown up.

Morton should control this one, but the only bet that I love is Atlanta to win and cover.

Cleveland Indians vs. Chicago White Sox Predictions

  • White Sox to beat Indians
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

There isn’t any pitching information out for this one yet, so I don’t have much of a lean.

Chicago is at home and tends to have the much more explosive offense, however, so they feel like a good place to start.

Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Predictions

  • Dodgers to beat Rockies
  • Predicted total: 8-8.5

Colorado is not good outside of Coors Field, and Dustin May looked really sharp in his 2021 debut. That’s a good place to start, as I see him dominating here.

Jon Gray gets the park upgrade, and he can dazzle at times, but his downfall is quality lefties. The Dodgers aren’t 100% right now, but they’re at home, and they have left-handed power in droves.

I love the Dodgers, and the Over is a fine secondary bet.

Best MLB Bets for Wednesday, April 14th

  • Pirates to Win (+181)
  • Phillies (-1.5) +140
  • Mariners vs. Orioles Over 9 (-115)
  • Rays (-1.5) +110

This first pick will go against the grain – especially considering the game Joe Musgrove is coming off of. That said, the Pirates are at home, there’s nowhere to go but down for Musgrove, and the Padres are without their best bat.

Pittsburgh is a very nice value bet at home, but you can play it a bit safer and still target upside by betting on the Phillies and Rays to cover. They’re both in great spots, and are nice -113 and -177 favorites if you don’t want to mess with the run line.

That Mariners game at Camden Yards again projects well, too. The game total feels a bit light for a contest featuring Matt Harvey on the mound.
