Picks and Predictions for MLB Games – May 31st, 2022

Last Tuesday’s MLB slate was a dream as we went 10-2. Unfortunately, I couldn’t keep up the momentum, going 3-4 on Thursday. However, my best bets went 3-0 for the second straight day. That brings us to 18-9 on the 2022 season.

We’ll have 16 games on Tuesday, with the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers playing a doubleheader. We’ll examine the ten games on the board for Tuesday, including Game 1 of that doubleheader.

Let’s start with the odds for each matchup.

Typically, we see one or two matchups with an overwhelming favorite. The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves are the biggest favorites, but (-165) odds are low for the biggest favorite. Honestly, the Mets should have a bigger advantage.

The betting trends show one matchup with both teams ranking top 10 against the spread. The St. Louis Cardinals have covered in 55.2 percent of their games, while the San Diego Padres are slightly behind at 53.2 percent.

On the other side, the Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays all rank bottom ten against the spread. Toronto is the lowest, covering in 42.6 percent of their games.

As we move to the run total, we have two matchups featuring teams that are top 10 in going over their run total. The San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies rank third and sixth, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Guardians have gone over their run total more than any AL team. That’s interesting considering neither team has a great offense.

We’ve talked about the White Sox and Blue Jays being bad against the spread. It turns out they’re 25th and 26th on the run total. Will we see a low-scoring matchup in Toronto?

There isn’t much to talk about with the AL Central matchups. The Minnesota Twins have dominated the division, while the Detroit Tigers are among the season’s biggest disappointments. The Kansas City Royals have the worst record in the AL.

I’ve been a big supporter of the Philadelphia Phillies this season. Philadelphia is better than their record, but they’ll have a tough time with the San Francisco Giants. It’s early, but this could be a battle of NL wild card teams.

We’ll have an intriguing battle between the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees. This matchup features the top three contenders in the latest 2022 AL MVP odds.

Those guys will have the spotlight, but I’m taking the Angels because of Noah Syndergaard. He pitched eight innings, allowing one run in his last start.

The Toronto Blue Jays have the pitching advantage with Kevin Gausman on the mound. There’s no reason to take the Washington Nationals over the New York Mets.

We could have another potential NL wild-card matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres. Blake Snell’s 6.00 ERA has me leaning towards the Cardinals.

We’ll quickly wrap up the final three matchups. The Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros have the advantage in the division matchups. I’m taking the value with the Atlanta Braves vs. Arizona Diamondbacks. That decision boils down to my lack of trust in the starting pitchers.

I’ve mentioned a few times how the New York Mets should be a bigger favorite. Well, I’m taking advantage of the misprice in my best bets.

New York is the home team in a matchup against a Washington Nationals team with the third-worst record in the majors. Mets starter Trevor Williams has struggled, but Patrick Corbin has been terrible.

The Mets have the second-best offense in the majors. They’ll have no issue with Corbin and the Nationals.

The Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays haven’t lived up to expectations because of a less than stellar offense. Toronto is starting to find its footing, but the White Sox have scored the second-fewest runs in the AL.

This decision is about the pitching matchup. Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman is having a Cy Young caliber season. He has allowed two runs or less in seven of his nine starts. White Sox starter Lucas Giolito has a 2.63 ERA in seven starts.

Philadelphia Phillies starter Ranger Suarez had high hopes for the 2022 season, but we haven’t seen him live up to expectations.

Suarez has allowed 3+ runs in five of his last six starts. The Phillies have a good offense, but that’ll be a tough task against the San Francisco Giants.

Giants starter Jakob Junis has a 2.76 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. San Francisco’s offense and bullpen have been better than Philadelphia. That gives them the edge in this matchup.
